Walthers Proto 2000 Wheel Sets?

      Vic B, Yes, isn't it nice they would recommend Wheel-Sets that they have advertised, for over a year and are still not available to the public?!? What a way to run a railroad! However, as I have stated elsewhere, I still like Walthers as I can generally find exotic parts and stuff there! My guess is this is a factor of the joys of a global economy. A supplier can charge you for the tooling and then market it as their own product (from your tooling) and take forever getting your parts to you. Not saying this is what's going on; but, I've heard many horror stories about dealing with Eastern Pacific Rim suppliers! Having been in the manufacturing business myself, tooling might take 2 months to produce, actually producing production runs should happen slightly longer. Being out of 33" Wheel-Sets for over a year, tells me things ain't going right!

        Intermountain web site under "Accessories" lists 33 inch wheelsets #40050. These are the wide wheels most common. They list their 33 inch semi-scale wheelsets #40052. The second being the narrow more to scale width wheels. All are listed as brass wheelsets.

          Thanks John, This information was previously given on page 2 of this thread. My supplier is out of the IM 40050 wheel sets, so I bought a couple packs of the Kadee Code 110 wheel sets.

            Mark....Sorry about the repeat of info from page two. I'll be getting a refund for that speed reading course I took. I was trying to keep up with this thread abit as I too had been using the Proto 2000 wheelsets as replacements on some Bowser hopper cars and I still have some more of those kits to build. I got into using the Proto wheelsets when my LHS was having a hard time getting Intermountain wheels. Go figure. Now the Protos are not available. :erm:

              No problem, John. The Kadee wheel-sets are very nice, other than the tread isn't shinny, like the P2K's are. You might like to give them a try.

                I just received a Walthers product up-date e-mail today. They show 33" wheel sets with metal axles to be in stock now. And also 33" wheel sets with plastic axles to be in stock now.

                #920-2300 for 33" metal axles

                #920-2301 for 33" plastic axles

                Also showing 36" wheel sets, in stock.

                  I was just at Walthers website earlier this week looking at Wheel-Sets and they where still showing the packets of 12 each 33" as "Out of Stock". However, you are correct, they are available now at $13.98 for metal axles and $11.98 with plastic Axles. ModelTrainstuff shows packets of 12 metal axle wheel-sets available at $9.99; but, is not showing the plastic axle sets as available, yet. The photos provided of the new Walthers wheels show wheels that are not nearly as detailed as the old Proto 2000 wheels. However, eventually when they get distributed to the retailers, they are giving a choice of metal; or, plastic axles which is nice! I'm sure I will try a packet at some point in the future. For anyone who has already tried the new wheels from Walthers, I am interested in what you think?

                    I wonder if the metal axle wheelsets have metal wheels or plastic ones? Does anyone know?

                      Both the Walthers metal axle (920-2300) and plastic axle (920-2301) wheel-sets have metal wheels as per Walther's website:
