  • the passing of Don Oberding

Dear Friends of the Raritan River Rail Road:

I received very sad news yesterday. A very good friend of the Raritan River Rail Road, Don Oberding, passed away September 19th. Dan was most active in historical railroad equipment preservation with the Tri-State Chapter of the NRHS. Of all that he preserved over his lifetime, most of which I will still need to learn, the most notable to our group was the restoration of Raritan River Rail Road caboose #10. Don spearheaded this restoration and was very concerned that the restoration was both of highest quality and prototypically accurate. I had the privilege of spending time with Don on numerous occasions over the past couple years, both up at the Whippany Railway Museum where Don would spend as much time as I wanted discussing the caboose and his work on it, and at many Jersey Central Chapter meetings where he would always seek me out and ask how we were doing in our efforts to get our chapter going towards the goals we had set. In my relatively short time spent in the railroad preservation community, Don was among the most dedicated, interesting and gracious persons I have met. I will treasure the time I spent with him, and only regret that there was not more time to talk with him further. I feel like I lost a good friend that I hadn’t quite got to really know yet. I truly feel that Don could make most people feel good to be must have had the same effect on many others. We will miss you Don.

If you would like to make a donation to Tri-State in Don’s memory, here is their information:

From their website: Donations and gifts to Tri-State are tax-deductible, and all of the money raised is put toward furthering Tri-State's educational efforts and toward the continued restoration of historic railroad equipment.
