  • Bob, yes I do indeed like the clean, accurate results I get with styrene although I get more pleasure working with wood.

Ed, I try not to be too immersed in the ancient history of my life but I will have to pick up at least one of the books. When I'm going out the door on a long distance drive I grab my 6" stack of Dylan plus collections of Beethoven piano sonatas and Bartok quartets.

Rob, thank you for looking in and also for your kind words. I enjoy watchng your progress as well. As far as craftsmanship and inspiration go, there is a lot of that to be had on these forums. I find watching others to be a real motivator.

    Mike

Wow! I thought I was the only one.

On road trips I prefer The Beatles and Mozart especially his Quartets and flute pieces.

      • Mike,

I replayed your thoughts quite a few times.

As I get older (74) I find myself thinking more of the past. I wonder why?

The relationships one cultivates on this and other sites is unique.

          Ed,

At our age there's a lot in the past to think about. In thinking back on music the 60's loom big but also the 90's - 00's because of the many hours driving to ice hockey practice and games with our two kids. The Offspring, Reel Big Fish, AFI, RATM, etc were great to listen to. Concerts were a lot of fun for all of us.

          • I've been cutting out windows. The lower left one has the sashes installed.

This week I'll be installing the rest of the sashes and working on the ends.

              • Rob, thank you. It's a slow process. I can usually count on window moldings to cover inaccuracies, but not in this case.

Thank you for looking in. It means a lot.

                          Bob,
One approach I find useful is to draw two horizontal guidelines for windows from one edge of the side to the other edge. Then I use the vertical grooves as much as I can to guide the lines for the sides of the windows. I align the ruler with the line marking bottoms and cut all three. Then I do the same for the tops of the openings. Then I use my square for the sides.

I change out my knife blade frequently.

I didn't try to cut windows for more than a couple sides at a sitting because my hand would get tired.

Thanks for sharing that Mike. It's very helpful. I recently found that taking rests while drilling holes for N/B castings increases dramatically the life expectancy of drill bits.

                              • Here is where I am at in caboose construction. Sashes are nearly complete, ends are cut out and well on their way.

Bob and I have had a virtual discussion going on here and his thread on the challenges of repeating an operation many times. You can see one way I combat the hand fatigue--and let's face it, boredom--that can set in. Once I have a repetitive step worked out I will start on the next step and sort of alternate activities.

The photo also shows how I do the sashes for the sides so that they line up. The cut-out openings might be a little uneven but my hope is that the contrast between the sash edges and the dark interiors will camouflage irregularities.

                                I guess we'll see.

                                Mike
