    Newport R.I. Center Cabs

    Good morning - Here are some pictures of a small group of Center cab locomotives I found while on a visit to Newport, Rhode Island.

    I will continue in another post, to allow for editing.

    We went to Newport to celebrate my 74th birthday, and to refresh my memories of a important part of my life.

    Beginning in 1957, I served aboard the USS Caperton (DD-650), the USS Gatling (DD-671)and

    the USS John Paul Jones (DD-932) all destroyers, the JPJ being of the newer Forest Sherman class.

    Anyway, there are no ships left at the base, and only a skeleton crew remain to service the occasional ship for repairs. (Thank you Mr. Nixon)

      More Center cabs -















      Judging from the condition of the track, it's my guess that these loco's belong to some preservation group as most of these locomotives

      are under some sort of repair progress. All of them are in need of fresh paint due to the salt air.

      Anyway, maybe you can get a couple ideas for y our "project" from these shots. Traffic and weather prevented me from staying any longer, not to mention the base police.

      Pretty much the story the whole time we were there. It rained so bad Wednesday night, we had to cancel out dinner at the "Bouchard" restaurant and reschedule for Thursday night.

      But all went well and I was wished "Bon Aniversarie" which included a complimentary glass of Champagne.

      The next picture is one I took of a building located on "Long Wharf" - What's wrong with this picture?



      Hint: Upper right hand in picture -

      We finally had the chance to visit some of the shops on Thames street, which was still cobblestone and hadn't changed much since I was there last.

      That's is it - hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I did, taking them.

          Thanks for all the pics Geezer.

          Should definitely give some of you critter builders some good ideas.

          I noticed the same thing about that first step out of those doors. [:-ouch]

            Bill thanks for the pictures.

            I sure wish you had said something about being in my town. I would of liked seeing you and maybe even helping you visit while in Newport.

            Also, Happy Birthday and yes, the Navy was the biggest employer in this area for R.I. and MA. We all hated to see it go away.

              Neat pictures, but first Happy Birthdayid="navy">id="size6">. That color is supposed to be Navy Blue.

              Definitely like the picture of the center cab truck in the open. Wish you had taken a couple more of the inner workings.

              Ya, that first step out that third floor door is a doozy. I bet they took the stairs away. but couldn't find anybody to fill in the brick work had they taken the doors out. Wonder if they nailed them shut? [B)]

                  That building must have had decks or stairs which were later eliminated.

                            Bill, just 5 miles down the track is where they store the 2 RDC's.
