    Answers in BOLD below;

I went thru everything and these are the questions that stand out right now:

Are you OK with just the added team track in Alice Arm? Or will I change that to an actual industry/structure?

For now this will work. We can look at expanding the spur to three or doubling th first spur, if needed.

Are you OK with the shortened curved trestle coming into Dolly Varden per Dan's observation?

Looks fine, I do not think the scene will be affected.

The first draft of my timetable only included a scheduled morning and afternoon mixed train between Alice Arm and Wolf mine. Is that enough?

For now and sake of debate it is OK.

Do you want to use train numbers in the timetable?

This would be fine once I nail down the roster.

What was/is your premise for expanding northward?

Actually, the DVRR was there. We came over the range to them, and reopened the line, and jump started the town again.

Will you go to Stewart, BC? Or are you going to use a fictional town for staging?

    Stewart is fine, it works.

Are we also scheduling 2 more trains (1 freight, 1 passenger) to staging?

Yes, I visioned staging to cure some of the reason for traffic / runs other than the ore and lumber. All the stuff the expanded area needs could come from over the pass, and yet some still from the wharf.

Will your logging and ore trains operate as extras on the line?

    What benefits? Issues??

Do you want me to continue to explose the traffic generator spread sheet? Or are you planning something else for generating traffic?

    Yes

Is one of the industries in Alice Arm the freight house? If not, will I add one?

    OK

Do you know what type of industies the unspecified ones will be?

Not fully. Looking at kits I have and potential kitbashing / town plan.

Should I add a mining warehouse to the Dolly Varden Mine?

The support building / compressor house was one I think.

Will you being using switch lists?

This I liked from running Dave Bourroughs D&RGW.

Will you being using hand written Waybills? Car Cards? Or something else?

    TBD

What are your thoughts on dispathcing trains?

    TBD

Will you be using train orders?

    TBD

        Hi Brad,

I'm using v.10 of 3rd PlanIt by El Dorado Software:

        http://www.eldoradosoft.com/

I'm really not the best one to ask for a recommendation since I have only used 3rdPlanIt and never tried anything else.

        Take care,

        Rob.

          Hi Brad,

Not much changed in this version, I just added a freight house to Alice Arm. When you know what type of other industries will be on the layout, I will add them to the traffic generator and we can decide what commodities they will ship and receive. From looking at the diagram of the Dolly Varden site, it seemed there was a separate warehouse with an 18" gauge railway going to it, that's why I had asked about the separate warehouse.

I also finally received my copy of Steel Rails and Silver Dreams, and I noticed that there was a gravel pit operation at mile 4, the line saw some lumber traffic when the various camps were being constructed and that there was a log dump on a trestle in Alice Arm. Are you going to add any of these to the layout?

I will also work on the next version of the timetable and at Stewart as the northern terminal for the line and also add another freight and passenger train to the mix.

          Take care,

          Rob

          • Rob,

I will be making a list of the kits I have on hand for direct build or kit bash beginnings. From this I can start thinking thru the "what ifs" for industry functions. The rock quarry is a idea but it will require another spur and access to a passing track. I will look at the last version and sketch out ideas. Will scan and post tomorrow.

How's the weather out your way? We hit mid 70's yesterday and today. Winter to summer in one week. Cool, we cut out the middle man (spring).

              Hi Brad,

Weather is still very mixed day-to-day. I delivered mail in just a golf shirt one day last week then had my winter jacket on the next. While most of the snow is gone, we still had a few flurries over the weekend. Right now everything is still very wet and saturated, so we will be in the mud season for the next few weeks.

              Take care,

              Rob.

                    • During the summer slow down on railroad related endeavours, I was trying to help visualize the plan to my wife, so that all board members were in agreement as to the right of way. Well she came up with a comment that has to be looked at to exhaust all doubt in anyone's mind.

She asked if it was possible to not enter the television room and just loop around the main room a few times. That will teach me to take her on layout tours. But it is a interesting concept. Some compromises, and a few positives.

Will look at a long centre section climbing out to the walls in a CW rotation up and around one and a half circuits. This will create a double duck under on the main door and a single duck under to the TV room. These are my biggest issues to digest and allow as a compromise. Will try to whip a proof of theory together in the next few weeks.

Something tells me I hope it fails but, to make too many waves is also a recipe for disaster.....

                      • Received good news the other day from Kitwood Hill Models, the 54' Gallows TT has been shipped. It's all about the waiting now. This will be the unit in the main yard.

Will be heading to the Nation Train Show in Cleavland on Sunday. I will see if any new items kick start the imagination again. Summer just kills the idea of spending any time modelling or planning.......

                          Hi Brad,

How is the plan for the double decking progressing? I'm eager to see the results.

                          Take care,

                          Rob.

                          • Hi Brad,

After our emails yesterday I decide to give the double deck layout a try, just to see what I could do in the space. In my opinion, the biggest obstacle to any design for your space is the location of the Man Cave and the need to maintain access to it, which would be even more problematic when going with 2 decks. It also doesn't help that the space can't be fully utilize for double decking.

After a few attempts, I just couldn't come up with a decent plan to fit the space, so I decided to step back and look at the space again, just to see what other options could be used. That's when it hit me to move the Man Cave from its current location and place it adjacent to the door. There would be many benefits including very wide aisles, the shelves could be wider and there is only 1 nod-under to deal with in the design.

The design also increases the number of scenes that could be included and the line is more authentic to the prototype. The design still maintains full access to combined Man Cave / Crew Lounge area and now you don't have to walk thru the layout space to get to it.

                            Take care,

                            Rob.

                            • Rob,

The TV room has to stay in the small room on the angled wall. All the wiring for the sound system / TV / cable ...etc. run out of this location.

All the seating is opposite on the other two walls.

This was the same restriction I had on the first plan. Only trains can run thru here, no major changes allowed by the CFO.

When I was trying this I was keeping the two levels on the outer three walls, and the peninsula's. Kept the wall with wolf mine and the TV room single level.

Never found a scheme I liked so far, but this has recharged the old thinker and has me sketching again.
