Yes, loops are a killer of space. The idea was to build the vertical separation in without the linear run. The radius down here can be lowered to 24in., as it's hidden, and as you roll out on the easement slide back thu 30in. in the exposed areas. The town and a small yard space can be built on top. The second loop was fodder for radius mockup.

This weekend the weather is to greatly improve down here. I should have my antique drafting table stained, and back in my office. Then I can plot out your concepts and get a better feel for the flow you are presenting.

Hi Brad,

99% of our information came from "Steel Rails & Silver Dreams". Very little online information exists for Dolly Varden. Most searches will just give you details about trout fishing (Dolly Varden is also a type of fish apparently). I did find a few modern day photos from someone who had done some mountain biking in the area, and a few from a small travel company that did some short tours (I think they were sea plane) around the region. These were helpful to get some colour references. Alex Zelkin (France), who had built sections of the line before, kindly shared some of his sketches/plans, but these were essentially scaled from photos in the book. The only direct sort of reference I had to the structures was I was able to get a copy of the plans for the ore bunker at the wharf. The book really is the one stop guide for this line.

Yep, there is more on the trout, than there is on Dolly's route. Good to hear I ran out the same searches and results. Found a load of documents online in a archive at UBC. Need to get library access and see if this holds any other documents of note. They are mostly drawings from Taylor Engineering.

Here's version #4 with the changes you requested. This design does fit in the rooms a lot better. It should also give you more room for Dolly Varden House while keeping the path to the Man Cave clear.

Interesting twist with the plan. I think I like the logging addition, which does expand the operational side of things a little. The space allowed for the Dolly Varden Mine/Tipple scene in the "man cave" should be sufficient on that corner, with some space to model camp 8 in the other deeper corner leading up to the mine site. I also quite like the arrangement for the Wolf Mine landing.

Perhaps the parts that I feel look a bit awkward are the area where the curved turnout leads into the highline spur to the ore bunker. There is a nice scene to model there with the housing on that uphill spur with the crib wall below, but on the plan here it will be half facing into the wall near the entry door. It might mean some of the impact of this scenic section go unseen. The other section I'd question is where the Alice Arm town and hotel are placed...its back to front in relation to where Dolly Varden House and the wharf are/were located, and I can see some difficult scenic transitions as you leave Alice Arm and head towards the wharf. There would be the backside of a hill on the isle side here where the highline spur starts to rise. From a scenic perspective, that might not translate very well. If the Alice Arm site was able to move along to the left of that wall, it would help that transition a bit, but doesn't change the way you would be viewing a backside of the hill on the highline spur. The only solution I see to helping this (and it goes against some of the prototype feel), would be to flip, or mirror, the Dolly Varden House and wharf scene, so the wharf would be facing Alice Arm in this plan, the highline spur would run on the wall side of the mainline as it comes around that last corner past the doorway. Would leave a nice tree lined mountain scene up against the east wall in this plan, where the backside of the hill could form a nice view block to the room as well when entering. The focus on entry would be Wolf Mine to the left of you, with Dolly Varden House not really seen until you round the corner into that operating isle.

This is looking nice. Flow seems better, and as we work thru some scene development things will shake themselves out. One thing we could also do is shorten the aisles in the wye area, and to the right of the ore dock. This extra shelf depth will help with scene field of view. I am tall (6'2") and a little more reach will be OK for me. The 30" radius could also go to 24" -26" if that gains some room. I will scan the loco roster and send it to you. The DVRR had small equipment. I currently have 2 Forney's, a Shay, a 2-8-0, a 2-4-4-2 and a rail bus. The 2-8-0 and the 2-4-4-2 is for my office display and a show module I am also cooking in the background. The Forney's may get bobtailed if they present swing, or power pick-up issues. These will go with the Porters and Climax I plan on picking up this year. Porters will get tenders for the same reasons.

From the software you are using what outputs for file types can you create. I would like to try importing a view of ver. 4 into the Inventor master model, and the aligning the 3D elements to your layouts. Better to try this when it's a smaller file size.
