  • Has anyone replaced a Kadee coupler's pin?

An older modeler was selling off his collect, and I bought some Kadee PS-1s. He'd cut off the trip pins so they'd run on his layout. I have some places where ramps are required, so this evening I investigated, hoping I could drop a whisker coupler into the box. I got the box/step assembly off, but the box/coupler appear unique, modeled on the old MKD-4 but not compatible.

I could order 2100 replacement units, but I thought of pulling/replacing the pins with others from broken Kadees in my junk bin. Has anyone tried this? Success/failure?

I bought the 2100 replacement units from Kadee; the cars have been in service 7 years now w/o problems.

      James,
Far be it for me to tell someone else it can't be done! I totally understand the reason why also! Yes, to answer your question, many years ago I went through the task of ripping out the old coupler pins on a few kadee's to preserve the original parts of a modelers build on a few cars, but I experienced a few hic-ups in doing so. My first problem was I didn't have brand new untouched pins and have to pull existing pins from new couplers to insert into the old coupler/knuckle and then I had some tweaking to do and after after all that I still had a couple pins not stay tight. Don't make the mistake I did with trying to super glue the pins either (not a great moment in my life). Well if you're not a fan of buying new ones then good luck with the old restored ones brother.
      Thanx Thom...
