  • Great Train Day With Two Layouts Outside and In

Chris, Lela and I spent a full day of train ops, first at Fred Mills' garden railroad, then at Eric Halpin's layout in Perth, a short hour's drive south of Ottawa. The above pic is from the outdoor layout which we ran in the morning.

This pic is from Eric's layout. We met up with fellow Friday Night Group members to run Eric's layout in the afternoon.

Let's look at a few pics from the morning session. Here is Trevor with his White Pass steamer.

That's Lela surrounded by three trains which are on the go.

    My train meets with Bob's.

Bob's steam locomotive at Craig Leigh.

Pat with a big smile. Peter and Bob are in the background. All three lads are in control of trains at the moment.

Pat's train and mine meet at Hammond.

At the end of the line, I turn my locomotive at the Palph turntable. Lawrence has done an incredible job scratchbuilding the engine house.

    Hank smiling at Bell.

In the afternoon, we reached Eric's layout in Perth. This scene on his layout depicts the town in which he lives.

I really like how Eric has located the station on this small section which juts out into the open aisle way.

    Indeed, a clever idea.

One of the numerous larger facilities on the layout.

I was thrilled to see one of my favourite locomotive schemes for the Cape Breton line on the layout!

As well as this favourite, the Algoma Central.

Yup, that's one beauty of a paint scheme.

And...don't forget the Ontario Northland! You've gotta love the backdrops as well!

Eric had a map which we could refer to while running.

It was fun as we were able to select from an array of train orders which Eric had pinned to the board.

Eric's layout appeared in CRM, a Canadian Railroad Modelling magazine...and deservedly so! This is a great magazine which forum member, John Longhurst is involved with.

    More interesting backdrops.

The Algoma Central passenger train with these great graphics.

    Our gracious host, Eric.

    With his able assistant, Bruce.

We had a blast today. I've got a ton more pics to share later on. In this image, from left to right, Chris, Lela, Joel, Bruce, me (front) Eric, Jim and Bob. Thanks to Joel for organizing the trip and thanks to Eric for hosting and Bruce for helping out! [:-apple][:-apple]

We had an awesome time. Here is Mike taking a few photos at Eric's Algoma and Rideau.

I took a video of the Friday Night Group operating. Enjoy.

This railroad was just great to operate and Eric was the best of hosts.
