  • A place to vent...

Rather than clutter up the lounge with the sometimes trivial rant of some of us forum members, I have opened this thread for a place to complain instead.

Moderators: If you think this thread is/will be out of line, feel free to remove it, no problem from the Geezer.

So, let me bring up the subject of "Thread Piracy".

Apparently, some members feel that they can post their work (pictures) on another members thread without first asking the thread owner.

To me, this is just not courteous, but ignorance of common sense as well. It just shouldn't be done. A simple PM/email asking permission would be the way to go, and may tender a favorable response. You never know.

We all go to each other for information and support. That is the main focus of this forum as I see it.

It makes the hair on the back of my neck stand when another member barges in on a thread and makes a joke, posts pictures of "Thier" work, or ridicules a particular way things are done. Or just comments in a thread to be flat out offensive.

We all work hard, and do the best we can. It may not always be how someone else would have done it or look like someone else perceives it should look. But it is a "personal" ownership thing, and should be recognized as such.

That being said, I will get off the box and let someone else say something if they care to. No offense meant to any particular person/modeler/forum member.....just venting.

We do have the freedom of speech and the right to remain silent but sometimes not the wisdom or ability to chose the course that pleases everybody.Really as long as we're being glided by our benevolent spirit we'll watch how our comments are reacted to and make appropriate adjustment to our choices.

If someone has something to add to a thread, that will only benefit it, i see no problem (take jounior's post of his 4-2-0 in my thread, or going way back, rick's posting of another modellers work to get me over some modelling block, les's work to show the use of metal tapes im sure there have been more in my own threads, but those spring to mind)

if its to nitpick beyond being helpful, yeah i can see that not ending well :P

Bill, it will take a lot more than this to offend me.

As for the thread piracy thing, I tend to agree with you. I'll post pictures to someone's thread only if it is relative to the subject of the thread. Conversely I have no issues if someone post pictures to my threads if they are relative to the subject of the thread. Personally I feel that people who posts pictures that are irrelevant to the thread are just wasting bandwidth. If they want to showcase their own work, it is just as easy to start a new thread.

As for the jokes, I'm sorry bill but if I see an opportunity to pick on you, I will, just as I know you will do to me. That being said there is only a select group on the forum I'll do that with and they know who they are. As for ridiculing someone, that I will never do. I'll offer suggestions either on the thread or if I'm not sure how it will be taken, I'll PM them.

I have learned a lot on the forum and it has improved my modeling greatly.

Hold it, before it goes too far:

"This thread is notid="size4"> about me personally. I started this post so that "Anyone"id="size3"> that feels that another member should ask permission before posting on his thread, could add his/her point of view.

In no way, did I mean for it to be taken as my "gospel" or how I think the forum should deal with thread piracy.....just a place to vent, like the title says.....

This thread is not a pick on anyone thread.....

              just a place to vent.....

I agree with all of this! And there are plenty of times when it is appropriate to post pics and even offer comment beyond the "looks great" pat on the back stuff, especially when someone asks for an honest opinion. Also, when someone does nitpick something and says it is wrong or they have never seen it and then - shown that there are specific examples of that specific something, good grief, just admit that you never saw it before. It's ok NOT to know everything! I sure don't.

I learn something new every day from the excellent modelers on this forum!

Craig, can we please put a cork in it? Enough of the bickering. Nobody is out to get you. The fact is you did post an unsolicited post, but nobody got hurt. Start over.

Geezer raises some good points so I thought to take a look at the rules of membership on this forum and found that they are legally-based (to protect the website from being sued), and that there isn't really anything about decorum (unless I missed it). May I suggest that we add a membership guideline thread in which there are rules of decorum, one of which would include a suggestion that you ask before posting pictures on someone's thread.

No Thanks....I will not put a cork in it. Im going to put my 2 cents in the POT I got a right to do that don't I??? I made a comment about a item that someone modeled that I never seen one before...that I didn't think the parent company made this item....so I did a little checking in a couple books I had in my stock and didn't find anything. I did not goggle it to DEATH... to see if I could find it[:-bigeyes2] NO big deal. Than I get a smart remark that it was found in 10 seconds. Than another smart remark for posting some pictures of a couple pop machines I scratch built on his post??? Ok maybe I posted 2 to many pictures but the first picture I posted was the only one I had of both pop machines together. Then a couple more comments were made that were in LEFT FIELD....really?? If that's the best someone can do well that's ok with me its not my railroad, but when a more experienced modeler try's to mention or makes a comment on something that he thinks the person could maybe do better on....and then gets [:-censored]about it??? So BEFORE everyone SLAMS my POST....I don't really CARE what anyone has to say about it. Stick a fork in me I'M DONE [:-bulb]

                          Craig,

You may have the right to speak out. However, it is generally discourteous to post pictures in someone's thread without that thread owner's consent, don't you think?

I don't post a lot, but I do read and since, "everybody has a right to their opinion," I guess I can comment. This thread reminds me of the old Atlas forum and that's a shame because it was an embarrassment.

Ray, your comment didn't really help.

Unlike the old Atlas forum, I think we are very capable of working things out in a cordial manner here.
