  • Shay Gear replacement

I would like to replace split gears on my Shay. I am fairly new with the old problem. If anyone can give me advice or tell me how they did take the shaft out or the whole procedure of replacing them.

    Thanks Greg

Greg, Hold off for a couple months on that. Bachmaann announced recently that they will have a program to replace those gears on all faulty locos or send you new ones to do yourself AFTER June 1,2013.

Best to wait for the new ones.

      Greg,

I got 3 sets of Shay drive line gears from my Bachman Vendor, it too me about 10 minutes to replace the front and back drive lines (they are unique) and now all my shays run well. I am interested too in the replacement announcement, I have not heard about that. I have a climax that needs work, and multiple railtrucks.

Thank you very much for the info. Last knight I found that the shaft covers come off so it should be an easy replacement. I also ordered metal gears because the lock is an older style in a brown box not a brand new one. There are thousands of customers who need new gears so not everybody is going to and with one.

          Greg,

You are right the covers come off really easily and often land harmlessly half way cross the room where you can see them. I managed to control all of mine, but did have a couple move pretty good coming off and trying to pop them on.

Geezer did the metal gears I think.

I think the metal gears should have been the first choice for Bachmann any way.

              Greg,

Probably...I got my oldest shay out this evening, pulled out on the main and did some laps with the new gear set, probably hasnt been run for a couple of weeks, ran well.

Hi Greg - you might want to take a look here before you get the steel gears.

Les has a good idea about ordering the regular replacement shafts & gears. Yeah, they may break again, but certainly are a lot less hassle & certainly cheaper.

Good Luck either way you go.
