  • Dead Track - HELP!

    Although I think I have followed the "rules" regarding wiring, I have a dead track and potentially bad turnout. But before I remove the turnout (no easy task at this time) I thought I would get a sanity check regarding how I wired the track (for DCC use). I seem to have gaps in all the right spots, but the engine still stalls in the one location regardless of which direction it is coming or how the points are thrown. Any ideas???? See attached diagram. Scott

    The only thing that strikes me as odd from your diagram is in the area of the problem cloud. Specifically, the dashed rail doesn't show a power feed. Apart from that and assuming there is a drop on that section of rail, perhaps a bad rail joint on the dashed rail or the solid rail in the dead area.

      I think you are correct sir. Have been looking at this for weeks scratching my head. I could see the power flowing from the right side through the "solid" rail, but did not notice I isolated the dashed rail. Duh!!!!! Hopefully, that takes care of the problem. Thanks. Scott

        I concur with John. Does the dash track have a feed?

            That most definitely is the problem. The dead spot starts right after the insulated gap on the lower rail, just right before it enters the problem cloud. The lower rail has a feed as indicated by the bottom arrow on the far left, but the upper rail does not have a feed, so any current transfer would stop at the insulated gap.

              EUREKA!!!!!!! Not only was the lack of power feed the problem on one rail, the other rail was not getting power because the rail joiner behind the switch was loose. It looked like it was making contact but a smaller code 83 rail was not seating in a code 100 rail joiner connecting to a code 100 switch. Let the Ballasting begin!!!!!!! Thanks to everyone for their input! It does take a village......Scott

                  My rule is "Every piece of rail has a feeder or is SOLDERED to a rail with a feeder"

                  I find that insulated gaps allow expansion of the rail to take place.

                  So I would also solder your rail joiners.

                    Its threads like this one that makes the time spent looking at these forums worth while. Somebody has a problem, takes the time to post the question, and in jumps a bunch of folks sincerely interested in helping out. Great job gang! Russ

                      I know it is a lot of wiring but I wire every piece of track.
