I think that Mike's original intent of expressing support for the families and responders involved in the tragedy will likely get side tracked by issues of guns, how we deal with the mentally unstable, lack of funding for school safety officers, etc. These are all issues dealt with in the political arena.

Like many of you, I have opinions on all those issues and more that could be tied into this situation. However, I would not express those opinions here because (1) it is against forum rules, and (2) it would tend to divide the membership along political lines. We come together here because of what we have in common and this 'family' will become divided if we don't keep our focus and discussion on that commonality.

Please adhere to the forum rules.

It is difficult for me to even begin to comprehend what the parents must be going through. It is just awful. My heart goes out to all those affected.

A huge tragedy and I feel so devistated for the families. It really brings it home how fragile our way of life is. As a parent/grand parant this situation brings tears to my eyes.

The only words that come close to describing what I feel are "numbness" and "incomprehension".

Having lived in CT for 25 years I hurt today. My wife was born, raised, and lived there for all of her life until we moved to Ohio this year. I can't even count the times we've been to Newtown. We cry over this senseless massacre and share the grief with those families who have lost their children to such evil and pray for them as well.

It has taken me this amount of time to respond to the tragic event that unfolded in Newtown, Connecticut this past Friday. I agree with Moderator Bruce that this forum is not the place to "soapbox" about gun control, mental health care and other such political "hot button" issues. The original intent of, my good friend, Mike Hamer's thread was to express the feelings of outsiders, like us, looking in at this horrific event.

On two levels, I cannot personally get my head around what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School, first as a parent, and second, as a paramedic, who would have to respond to such carnage. People, not matter how strong, are not equipped or prepared for such an event.

We all agreed, while I was work at our paramedic station, on Friday evening, while watching the events unfold, empathizing not only with the families of the victims, but also the first responders arriving at the school just after the events unfolded. In fact, one of my veteran colleages of thirty-plus years, I think put it right, by saying, "Mike, how do you even respond and react after seeing something like that?" I believe he was talking both as a paramedic and a father.

Our heartfelt condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to all involved. We will not forget you.

                        Michael

Thanks for posting Mike. Being an educator and a parent made Friday a tough day, watching on my off periods in the lounge with fellow teachers. Thankfully our school district does work in conjunction with the police department to have a resource officer at all of our district schools. A senseless trajedy for those 26 families to have to cope with.
