    Steel Caboose for the C -and- R

    I'm working on a caboose for the C & R starting with the frame. It's going to be steel framed with a steel sheathed body similar to the East Broad Top's boxcars. Here's a couple of shots of the frame so far showing a detail of the horizontal stiffeners. Next up is the brake rigging.

      Here's the assembled frame. I had to remove the diagonal steel bracing at each end of the car frame because I forgot that I was building a steel underframe caboose and not a hopper car. [:-paperbag] The modification was needed in order to support the end platforms and coupler pockets. The coupler height lines up with my other cars without requiring additional fiddling. Gee, what did I do right? [:-dopey] The trucks are from PBL. Next up are the walls and windows.

          Thanks, Bruce. This is as far as I can go because I'll have to handle the frame while making the walls and I HATE breaking off parts. :erm: Once the walls 'n windows are completed, I'll add the interior.

                This is an interior end wall shot with the door. I'm using materials that I have on hand and the end wall wood looks very heavy in this photo. I'll have to sand it down a bit. The door needs to be cleaned up some and then pinned vertically on the frame edge so it can be swung open or closed. Another pin on the bottom of the door will hinge it on the floor. Need some more fiddlin'!

                    Hey, Frederic...

                    I'm going to sand the wall down tonight and see how it looks. I just had a thought. I need the wall thickness to accommodate the swinging door, but if I still don't like the looks of the wood, I have very thin styrene strips that I can lay over it. I'll see how the sanding turns out. I'm also going to have operating windows as well.

                        I'm just getting caught up with your build, Russ. The operating doors and windows are unique. You're off to a nice start.
