  • How to use the forums Search function

The RR-Line's search utility is a bit quirky, but if you know how to use it it works very well.

    1) If you are going to search an entire message, you must limit your search to only one forum at a time.

If you don't, the function will time out and you will get an error message.

    2) The best way to use the search is to search by Subject Only.

When searching this way you can search all the forums at once.

    3) Don't forget to search the archived posts too.

An alternative to using the forums search is using Google's advanced search feature explained here: http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/t...TOPIC_ID=10338

I'm updating this old post after RR-Line's re-launch using vBulletin Forums in September, 2021. Due to software bugs, the built-in Search function and the other forum functions that try to use it often give the "403 - Forbidden: Access is denied." error.

Right after the new site went on-line, Google and DuckDuckGo hadn't begun to re-index it. Result links used the old TOPIC_ID format and didn't work.

As of September 14, 2021, both Google and DuckDuckGo results are starting to use the new 'node/12345' format. I can't say when the re-indexing will be complete. But even now it's better than nothing:

In your browser's Search or Address field, type "site:railroad-line.com Words I Want To Find". All the results (except ads) will be from RR-Line.

      update/
      Rick, FYI Link doesn't work.
      http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/t...TOPIC_ID=10338

The only search I see is if you open a titled thread such as the on30 lounge, but the search is limited to the content of that thread only? Pretty useless if your looking for an old thread you started or searching for a how-to. tutorial, or anything else.

Philip, the old links don't work anymore because there is a difference now in the web address of the new forum.
Joe, removed the search from the main forum page because it wasn't working.
Till that gets fixed you'll have to try search engines like Google or DuckDuckGo.
But even those don't work well but are starting to do better as James wrote in his post.

Hey we have a forum. So sick of FB....

I'm trying to locate a couple of my old build threads.. The "NEW YORK MILL IN BALSA FOAM" and the two different threads for the "SILVERADO MINE" . I think the HO version of the Silverado Mine was around 76k views... Anyway, both are older threads and I can't locate those threads. I would really like to see all of my older build threads as I may be writing a 'how-to' book.
Any hints on how this older member can find my old stuff??? Old username of "hoN3_rr".

        Tx in advance Rick....

          Kris,

Here's the New York Mill Modeled in Balsa Foam : https://railroad-line.com/node/32317

I was able to find the New York Mill using this format: site:railroad-line.com NEW YORK MILL IN BALSA FOAM

It brought up the thread on the new forum software. Unfortunately it didn't work for the Silverado Mine. It showed the old forum address. Was it in the same Forum = "Starting From Scratch"? If so then if you can remember about what time it was started a manual search could possibly be used to find it.

            Kris,

I think I found the Silverado Mine thread. Is this it? https://railroad-line.com/node/14580

I used your old forum name and went to the member list. Found your HOn3_rr name and looked at all the threads you started. There was 5 pages. I located it on page 4.

            Bernd

NOTE: Yup, I found it. It's the first page here: https://railroad-line.com/node/40/page39

I'm still stuck and need assistance. I need to locate my old thread "Lucas's Cabin" and can not locate it. I have been able to obtain the following about the Lucas's Cabin thread from the link in the New York Mill thread:
                http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/t...TOPIC_ID=40591
Any assistance in how to locate
the thread would be of great help. I also tried to bring up all of my old threads using my old user name and was not able to even make that work. Super frustrated here.
                Thanks in advance.

Kris, is this what you're looking for? https://railroad-line.com/node/28782

Found this by going to your old user name, clicked About, scrolled down and clicked Find All Started Topics

I did that about the same time you did Rick. You beat me to it. I didn't find the answer though. Now I've got to go back and what I missed.

                    Bernd

NOTE: I should have searched under "Find all started posts" instead of "Find all posts". I did note a difference in results between the two.

Thank you, Wayback Machine and Internet Archive. Google seems to be making very little progress rebuilding their RR-Line index, and DuckDuckGo's search is less sophisticated. I had been looking for content I posted to someone else's thread in 2015. I was able to find it via the Wayback Machine:

                      1. Go to web.archive.org.
                      2. Enter http://railroad-line.com in the BROWSE HISTORY box.
                      3. It shows a calendar with dates it had crawled the forum. I had an old link in my layout thread's index, I looked at a couple of dates before my layout thread showed up in Mid-Scale Model Railroad Forum's 'Show Topics From Last 30 Days'. It doesn't work to change that to 60, 120 etc.
                      4. In my index post, I clicked on the old link and got a new tab with the thread I wanted. I noted the date, title and member who created it.
                      5. In the new forum I found that thread. With 953 pages of member names. It might have been faster to go through Mid-Scale Model Railroad by date.
                      6. I edited the link into my index in the new Forum.
