    Ring Eng. power pick-up trucks for steam engines?

    All of us have these old small brass steam engines that we are trying to re-do to today's standards for operation. I have a couple of old steamers that don't run nearly as the Bachmann steamers mostly to the improved power pick-ups. Some like Greg Rich have done a great job improving the performance of their small brass engines. However I found this web site that sells these power-pickup trucks mostly for modern roadroading at ringengineering.com Looks like you could change the plastic truck frames to something more 19th century.

    I am thinking that a couple of these trucks under the tender of my brass engines might work to improve electrical pickup. Has anyone tried anything like this? I may get a couple an report back on how well it works. - Nevin

    The Ring may be good for what you want to do as far as extra power pickups. I use them to power lights in rolling stock, like the Cabooses.

    However, for adding extra pick-up and go power for the Steam Locomotives, I have found the NWSL Stanton drive units can be placed into your tenders and use/mount the original side frames on to them. They are DCC able to install a decoder, and pull fantastic. Also great for use on Diesel Locomotives as well. They come powered and non-powered with elec. pickup.

      One could also buy the tender trucks from Roundhouse, they have all wheel pick-up and leads, and are already archbar trucks, no modifications necessary.

        Can these still be purchased somewhere, like Walthers. I did pick up several of these while MDC was still in business. I wasn't aware the new MDC/Athearn sold these. They are very nics.
