Karl,
No need for a kit. Look at how Troels builds his buildings and do something similar. I am on my second such building project, a depot similar to his. Troels of course is a true artist and very fast workman, so his efforts are excellent. But I am learning, SLOWLY, and having fun as well.
And also get his video "Realistic Color for Railroad Modeling" if you don't already have it.
Troels has been a great teacher to many of us following his forums.

Thank you for all the nice greetings for our 35th anniversary, also from Anne!
I have been sitting at my modeling table painting details and figures for a couple of nights...
Mr. Orrgren is now ready to work outside the greenhouse. And a vendor of domestic paraphernalia now trades from a very weathered stall across from the bank in Convers... Ma Furlow from the fruit store next door seems to have opinions about the quality of his products...

I had the pleasure to introduce the Coast Line RR and the artistic approach to model railroading of Troels Kirk to the Niagara Region of the NMRA at the 2012 Convention in Sudbury Ontario Canada. The photos from Troels Kirk were used with permission as well as the forum thread discussions about modeling techniques and layout scenery work. The audience were extremely interested in Troels work and had lots of questions about his techniques. Thanks Troels for allowing me to share your talent with my fellow Canadian modellers.

Chris, I'm glad the presentation went well, and honoured that the Coast Line was the subject! If my approach can inspire others to create their own scratchbuilt structures and their own unique layout instead of copying and relying entirely on kits I would be very pleased :-)
