  • I use RailModeller Express. I work on a Mac, but I think it works on a PC as well. It has a good library and seems pretty easy to use, although I am a beginner.

    • It would be pretty cool if somebody has built a track library for Autocad, and if some basic functions for layout design have been created. Meanwhile the basic Autocad platform would allow you to realistically draw bridges, buildings and perhaps landscape in 3d and do nice renderings.

Train simulation sounds like an interesting feature.

      • I use Cadrail. It works well for me. It's primarily a track planning software but you can also use it to draw 2D plans for building and bridges and the like.

        • Thank you Scott, I'll take a look at RailModellerExpress. Thank you Bob, I was able to use the program, may just need the update but it is a bit pricey. Thanks for your input.

          • I did get the CADRAIL version 9 working (kinda sorta) but is still awkward. The upgrade costs more than some of the other programs complete. Looked at all those mentioned here and in reviews. AnyRail seems to be the best value and very well received. Since I'll basically be starting from scratch I think I will go with the AnyRail program, especially since they offer a free trial.

            • I'll be interested in knowing what you think.

              • all CAD programs come with learning curves. I'm very interested in your thoughts on Anyrail.

                • Am going to try it out a bit later and will give my thoughts to date. Right now was really disappointed to find that Fine N scale products had closed. Loved their rolling stock kits, especially the 36' truss kits. Was looking for fnr-2104 (the tank to mount on the 36' flat/gondola kit for an old tank car). Have not found any. Will check my stock to see if I still have some. If anyone knows knows where to find some, please let me know.

                  • Very happy that I still have most of Fine N scale products inventory. Hav e 36' truss reefers and wood boxcars, as well as some of the tanks and flatcars. Am short about four flat cars. Did play with the AnyRail program some, very pleased with that so far. Looking through the manual to learn how to do things correctly, but very promising.

                    • Have been playing with AnyRail trying to get used to it and learning how to place items with precision. Not there yet, but working on it when time available. Tax time coming up will put a damper on everything for awhile.

                      • I found AnyRail very helpful a few years ago. I didn't use all the bells and whistles, but was able to do basic track diagrams, etc.

I don't know exactly what style tank you are looking for, but you might want to look around the Shapeways website. They have some 86 pages of N-Scale items. I did see this tank car and some other tanks.

                        • Thank you Bruce,
I downloaded the AnyRail manual and trying to find things in the menus. Was playing with the grid yesterday before dinner.
I discovered the Shapeway website yesterday while hunting for bottle crates in n scale for my Root Beer brewery (future plans) to go with my Dad's Root Beer trucks. That looks to be a very helpful site.

                          • I saw that tank car but it is a bit out of price range. Am looking for options and found a few kits, also found some of the Fine N Scale Product tanks in my inventory that would be placed on a flat car.
Have been playing around with AnyRail when I had a little time and decided to go with it. Think I will update my CADrail program also because I like its CAD capabilities better (though not as easy)
Tried to save a screenshot and post but I obviously have to relearn how to post an image.
