    Working HO scale Wig wags

    A friend who owns a local hobby shop, has been working with another gent for the past 5 years designing, and refining, a working model of a Wig Wag crossing signal.

    They had it at the Madtown Model Railroad show In Madison Wi. for the First public viewing this last weekend. ( February 20th, and 21st, 2010.

    Too cool!!

    They are powered by a Tortoise switch machine.

    As so much time and effort was required to produce these in a manner that no visibale linkages or led wiring can be seen, the pricing is NOT for the fient of heart.

    $329.00 a pair.

    But, if it is something you have always wanted, and you have the means....they will soon be available via the hobby shops web page.

      Looks great. But a sound decoded locomotive runs that price so I am not sure about their pricing. If they want to sell a few to the rich and famous I guess it will work out, but the mr market may not support such a costly item. Maybe they can sell their patent to a big manufacturer and volume sales will cover the development ...

        Those were my thoughts as well Chris.

        Sometimes folks just don't want to hear that we don't think all their efforts, expense and hard work is worth the price they want.

        Time will tell with sales, or the lack there of which direction they need to go.

        I don;t know of anyone else who offers the option of actual working and lighted wig wags.

        Personally, even though I wish them great success,[:-tophat] I'll take the loco and install cross bucks.[:-cowboy]

        I do hope they figure a way to make them more affordable...they are so very cool!

          American Limited Models has an HO Scale Operating Wigwag Crossing Signal Kit. The signals are powered by an under table drive system. Rayon thread is used to make the signals swing almost invisibly at a prototypical speed, and when shut off, the signals stop straight down, just like the prototypes.

          Model #5410 is a complete kit with crossing detector and activation switches. The detector operates with trains traveling in either direction at any speed, using small momentary activation switches that are imbedded in the track. The timing of the signal shutoff after the train passes is adjustable.

          I'm not sure what the ones you had seen are, but that seems real high for a price when they can be had for these prices. What do you think? Are they like these? I know your video shows a signal a little different than this one, but it must be the same as far as operation goes.

              Hi Dave, I've never come across a video of this item myself, or have never seen one up close. But by the picture and the explanation of how it works, it seems to be a gem for the price. I don't know how your friend will make out with theirs if they are planning to charge that much for theirs.

                I have a set of the ALM working wigwags, with the sensors/detectors, they were $45 I think 4 years ago, everything included, there used to be a video of it working on the ALM website. I never got around to assembling them as I found RRL and switched to O shortly after.........

                $329 does sound expensive for something that is available elsewhere for around 10% of that price, sure they put alot of time and effort into the development but, you cant expect to recoup all that in the short term by charging a high price, no sales means no profit.

                  I have (had) the American Limited units on my layout. Took them out. Very fragile, difficult maintain.
