The problem with starting the "Coast Line RR Vol 2" thread, is that it's hard to see on the "On30 Line" page, i use to just look for the post with the most pages. Now I have to search and look for the post with the least pages. Hopefully that will change soon. Ha.

Well, I decided on the red roof... asbestos slates. I needed that red spot of colour behind the the greywhite lighthouse. Made from oxide-red Canson MiTeintes pastel paper, painted unevenly, cut into strips and notched with scissors.
I'll test photograph the station in place on the layout tomorrow, time and snow permitting. Also I have cast a lot of eaves brackets in resin today, and need to clean a little flash and paint them before installing.

Troels,
I have been working backwords, reading your volume-one thread. After completed the last 25 pages or so, I have a few questions regarding making waves. I use silicon for moving water and was planning on using the same of the shoreline action. Your results using spackle are making me rethink which product to use.
- Is the spackle brittle or flexible? I have found that moving water tends to be a big dust and dirt collector, so frequent and rough cleaning is required. My concern is if brittle the waves will get damaged in cleaning.
- Aging of the product is of concern. This has been an issue for some of the silicon products, which began to turn yellowish on me over a two year period. (I no longer buy the cheap stuff.) Perhaps the spackle will age better?
- A question on painting. Have you tried mixing paint within the wet spackle (which is what I found most realistic using silicon), or are you only painting after dry. Do your waves look as realistic from the naked eye as they do in photos? (Always a compromise.)
With all the work we put into creating realistic water and some of the aging issues I have experienced, I have been more focused on long term results. Your thoughts?
Great work Troels and looking forward to leveraging your experience.

Greg, precisely for the reason you mention I use a flexible spackle from Polyfilla. It can't be sanded when dry, but remains flexible. I don't mix it with colour, and paint it when it is completely dry. The waterbased gloss floor varnish on top of the paint makes dust removal easy. The spackle, colors, varnish and gel should age much better than silicone.
It is a very time consuming method, but well worth the effort IMHO.
And I think it looks good in real life, and guests seem pleased. Come have a look anytime ;o)

Sunday afternoon update! I've had some time off the honey-do list today, so I got the home-cast eave supports painted and installed. I took the station out to the layout to see how it works in context, and to make a pattern for the platform.
