  • KFC - Upgrades

I know a lot of people turn their noses up at that old Lifelike KFC kit. I thought it would be great for my 1970s PC if I could make some upgrades to it.

The more I thought about it, I thought it would be great if I could get the bucket to rotate. so I picked one up at my LHS for under 10 bucks.

I discarded the sign posts that came with the kit and replaced them with 3/32 brass tubes, ran a piece of brass wire through the tube for a shaft.

I used a 50:1 NWSL gearbox for slow rotation and a NWSL motor. Im sure there is probably an easier way to do this, but I got it to work the way I wanted it to.

    A couple of figures.

I can't remember for sure but it seemed the old KFC prototype buckets back in the 60's wobbled when it was turning? They were built that way. Correct me if I'm wrong....[:-dunce]

    Neat trick anyhow!

I dont remember them wobbling. If they did , im not sure I want to get that energetic with the project.

One think it needs with those large windows is an interior. So ive been making booths out of brass.

A nice project indeed. Nothing like a little animation to draw your attention to a scene. Once there attention is on the scene, those interior details will be a real bonus.

I remember the sign that Philip is talking about. The bucket was attached to the top of the sign at an angle, so that when it turned it looked like it was wobbling.

Nice job on the interior.

The U tube video was just what I was thinking with the bucket spinning on an angle. I guess you could slightly bend the drive rod a tad. A real sign of the times with the dress.

                those were the days....

Thanks for the comments. Funny thing is I got into model railroading when I was in the 4th. grade back in 73 (the same year I model by the way). When I got a Tyco trainset for Christmas.

We lived in an apartment on the westside of Indy. In my bedroom I had the typical sheet of plywood with an oval on it. I had 3 buildings on it ( I hardly call it a layout, but had lots of fun with it). One of those buildings was the Lifelike KFC. So that kit has been around a long time. Exept now Im trying to make it a little more presentable out of it.

                      Hi Scott,

The KFC is looking great. You're doing a very nice job of detailing it![^]
Look out for #1, but don\'t step in #2!
