  • Thursday Morning Lounge

Good morning all from a snowy northern Maine. Lovely. Since it's snowing how about some oatmeal for breakfast this morning? If you insist we will whip up some scrambled eggs and bacon for you.

Since I have decided to take the plunge and will attempt to paint my own backdrops I need some advice on paints. The backdrops will be mostly pine trees and hills. I have been most of the backdrop sticky but haven't found anything paint specific so my question is -

What would be a good online source for the appropriate paints? Also, which colors?

And if someone can direct me - there was a great thread on painting backdrops a week or so ago but I can't find it. I don't know if it was in the sticky or under somebodies construction thread. Anybody know where it is?

    Have a great day,

    Dave :erm:

    Morning guys,

It's feeling chilly here but it's sunny too so winter isn't really here for me. I#m surprised that it has started snowing in Maine, I thought it would be another month or so.

Anyway, I think that acrylic paints would probably be the best to paint backdrops with. I'd go for pretty much any type. The 'craft' paints like Apple Barrel that you can get easily would probably be good as the cheaper artists acrylics are PVA based and have a bit of a shine to them when dry.

Have you thought about using blow ups of photographs for your backdrop? Harsco's build thread has some great pictures of his backdrops in his recent postings. They look amazing and have convinced me that photo print outs make the most natural looking backdrops.

Good morning crew. Thanks for breakfast, Dave. It’s gonna be unseasonably warm here in Hampton Roads today.

Dave, I’m the last person to give any advice about backdrop painting, so I’ll keep my mouth shut.

I’m hoping to finish my warehouse drawings today and take them to the club tonight. If the boss says they’re OK, I’ll have to figure out what materials to order. The side walls are 90’ long, so it’s not a small project.

      Have a good day.

        Gooooooooood Morning, Crew...

Not much MRRing going on here...waiting for the weekend to do some more work in the train room (The Dungeon). It's the last few days of our sales month at work, so I don't have any fingernails left. [:-shake] I watched the Phillies win the NLCS last night and tonight very well may bring New York into The Series. Well, time for another cuppa and surf da net a bit. Have a great day everyone!

Good morning from northern New Jersey. Temps today should get near 70 degrees and then drop into the 50's for the days that follow.

Dave, depending on how large your backdrop is, you might consider quart cans of regular water based paints from the paint store. I did that for my sky blue and clouds (white).

Our son is going to help me with a few things in the yard today before he heads back to Nebraska tomorrow.

          Have a great day!

Good morning crew and thanks for opening and the breakfst Dave. It is suppost to get up to 57F here in southern Ontario. We entertained family from out west last night so I am little tired today.

Dave I agree with Neil's suggestions, but photo backgrounds have to be chosen very well or they don't look right. Have agreat day!

Grey and dull here in MI but no snow, thank goodness!

Regarding the background question, I used regular latex paint for the sky blue and then for more detailed background work I've used acrylic craft paints from the Michaels or Hobby Lobby stores.

Sure hope all have a good day.

                      Good Sunny Thursday Morning.

We have 50 at the moment heading to a high of 70 with sunny sky's all day, or so they say. Thanks for opening Dave. Rolled oats don't sound bad so I'll have a bowl with milk and sugar.

As for backdrops, I'm planning on using a semi-gloss sky blue water based paint and white for clouds if I ever get that far.

Sat in my tree in the late afternoon yesterday, and I managed to miss a nice 6-pointer at about 15 yards. There's nothing like watching your sail a foot over your target :erm: . The sun was at my back so I can't use that as an excuse. There's a front moving in for the weekend so I'll try again sometime today.

I have some things to do outside today as sunny weather is a hard thing to let it go to waist. I also have to run to town later on to get some dog food and some other odds and ends.

Watched the Philly's win the Nation League last night and I'll watch to see who wins the American tonight. If their not careful they'll be playing the Series in November.

Nothing much to report on the modeling front. I looked over some old Train Shed's that I have before watching the game. I'm planning on build some rolling stock over the winter. Monday we have to go to the big city, so I'll pick up a bunch of basswood and other goodies.

Time for some coffee and look over the forum. Have a good day and God Bless.

                        Good Morning All!

Thanks for the opener Dave, I Love Oatmeal.

It is a BEAUTIFUL autumn day here in Central MA! [^] That would be like 3 in a row.

This is the east shore of the lake taken just before the sun broke over the tops of the trees this morning.

I actually did some work on my lumber shed last night; I also picked up the new 2010 10 Great Layouts yesterday.

Russ, Lets HOPE the Yanks can lock it up tonight!

That will help LA's budget for next year by not having to pay for the extra cross country trip tomorrow!

'Nuff for now; have good day everyone!

Good morning crew! A day off for me, but a list of things to do a mile long and none of it MRR related! [!]

Yup, my Phillies won the NLCS last night!!! It's on to the World Series for the second year in a row. Looking forward to a great series with New York! It's gonna be ugly though. New York fans and Philly fans mixed together? Oh boy!!! Sorry Russ, the Yanks are going down!

Well, on to get my chores done. I hope everyone has a great day.

                            Good Morning all!

Not much to report from Buckeye land on this sunny Thursday other then I stopped at Col/San on my way to the grocery store yesterday and saw 2 NS merchandise trains in a hours time..I may head over that way later today.

A lot of guys use artist paint for their backdrops.

However,I fully believe using a enlarge photo looks more realistic.

I shall have a cup and look over the forum.

                            Have a good'n!
