  • After Market Auto Warranties

    Hi All,

This may be a bit controvertial but I post it just in case you have been interested in after market warranties. I've always viewed them as scams and never considered even thinking about getting one but as my Aztek has been nickel and diming me to death, I started to wonder about them. So, I did a google search and came up with the following link. I post it for anyone that has been considering one of these warranties, not to get into a discussion about them. More than likely most of us feel the same way--wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole!!

    Andy,

    Thanks for the link.

We haven't fell for this but I wondered how Rusty Wallace could endorse a company on TV that scams people.

I guess they'll do anything for money.

      Hi Dave,

Yes, I felt the same way. Felt bad the Rusty is promoting it.[V]

I had an extended warranty on a car I bought some time ago, assumed it was from Chrysler themselves. Later I needed some work done and found out the dealer had sold me a warranty from another firm, which had gone bankrupt. But the dealer honored the warranty themselves. Later warranties I got on my leased vehicles were from Chrysler. Their warranty is for three years, the leases were for four and I didn't want to have problems.

The Aztek is rather like an English Bulldog. There owners think they are the most beautiful animal in the world. Everyone elst thinks that they are rather ugly!

            Sorry Andy, couldn't resist!!

The wife manages a car repair shop. Some of the warranties do manage to do as advertized but it is best to stick with one issued by the manufacturer of your new vehicle, just because the dealership is selling it doesn't mean it necessarily is backed by the mfgr. They can be sort of like paint treatment and undercoating, cash cows for the dealer to make up for the 'below invoice' price they gave you and of questionable value in the future.

Warranties? The only ones I ever take are those directly from the manufacturer at the time of sale. I must throw out at least 2 or three of then that keep showing up in the mail weekly for cars I've long sold.

Hey Simon, no worries!! It looks great from where I sit, on the inside!! The first time I ever saw one, I won't tell you what I said!![:-bigeyes2] But I can tell you that I thought that I would be the last person to ever buy one until we looked at the inside and drove one! I just wish the quality was better. Don't have to worry now, GM took care of the Pontiac problem![V][:-cry]

It's that lack of quality that helped put GM in their current state. Expensive repairs on cars their owners haven't even paid off yet.

I get those same mailings. The funny part is my car is still under it's original manufacturers warranty. I never purchase 'extended warranties' or similar 'services' sold, either from car manufacturers or other retailers. Rarely are they are advertised as the fine print narrows down what they really cover and they usually have loop holes that limits coverage. As my dear late father used to say, 'if it sounds to good to be true, it usually is!' Wise words!
