Shay noise question?

    Shay noise question?

    My shay runs fine forward but in reverse the motor makes a loud noise. Is this normal for them or do I need to check for a burr or something. It's odd that it's REAL quite going forward but not in reverse. Other than that, it runs GREAT!

    Mine is nice and quiet both directions. Is the sound in the motor itself or in the gearing? Have you broken it in, maybe it is the brushes making the sound in one direction.

    Just a few thoughts,

      Zekjet - I thought about the breakend bit. The Shay was given to me as a gift about a year ago and I've never really run til now. Maybe I'll set up a small test circle and run it for a while.

      Like I said earlier, it's real quite going forward and it does sound like the brushes dragging.

        don't be afraid to remove the motor and gearing to lube it, following directions of course. I remember folks saying NOT to introduce oil to any part of the motor shaft, but YES to adding additional heavy lube grease to the gearing to quiet it down and minimize the "bucking effect" on downgrades.

        A good run in on a loop of track is always a good idea....tom

          The motor is mounted vertically as is the motor in the Climax. In rebuilding a Climax into a Class A, I found a similar noise and it was driving me crazier than I already am. Off and on I worked on the problem over several months. I remounted the motor several times, padded it with foam rubber, yadda,yadda, yadda. I would not continue the conversion until I could squish this noise. Finally out of desperation I put a drop of oil on the top motor bearing. Voila! No noise and the engine has been in service for almost 2 years, no problems.

              I used a thick Labelle oil. The number was worn off the container. A tiny drop was all that was needed.

                Sage advice Gary....I guess what I should have said was "not to over oil"...my first shay went up in a puff of blue smoke when I apparently over oiled the motor shaft It was later that I heard of the "over oiling" part. :erm:

                  The problem seems to be one of gravity. Because of it, too much oil can run down the motor shaft which seems to have caused some issues. However, a dry bearing is quite noisy and like the sound box of a guitar the locomotive structure seems to amplify the sound. Something that I have not tried but should, is a little graphite dust applied with a tiny paintbrush to the top bearing. Sort of like putting weathering powder on your motor. As nice as the Bacho engines have been , their Achilles Heel seems to be the vertically mounted motors and also delrin gears tightly pressed onto axle shafts which often causes them to split.
