Hey you log guys out there, am I in the wrong place or are there no posts or activity in the forum? If anyone see's this can you tell me the differance between the reg 501 Kadee and 551 Kadee Arch bars? I know it says self centering but what exactly does that mean? Thanks for any help..........Jerry

Jerry,

You are in the right place. There has been little activity here. Some of the logging topics get included in other threads, particularly the Fine Scale Forum. I am guilty of having done that.

I have litle to add to the difference between the #50l and #551 trucks, except the 551 is listed as in use from 1900 to 1941 and the 551's are a dollar higher. I have used only the 501's on the SW Backwoods MOW Train and plan to convert all logging rolling stock to 501's. Sorry, I can't be of more help but I left my Kadee catalog in New Mexico.

I'm not sure what they mean by "self-centering" unless it refers to the way the frames are "equalized" over varying track conditions.

Like Jim, I'm using the #501's on my work train and other cars. I like their appearance and the way they roll. I did notice that the 551's are 50 cents more per pair than the 501's.

After we started up the Finescale Forum last winter, it kind of became the "catch-all" for a number of topics and discussions that should have been posted elsewhere. We've got several on-going threads that probably should be in the HO Forum or in the Layout Construction Forum or .... [:I] And I'm as much to blame as anyone for letting it happen. So it's not just the Logging Forum that has seen little activity as a result.

Hey, Jim, nice list but do you also have a list of model manufactures of logging and mining related items. In particular I've seen somewhere in the past a manufacture of saw mill equipment. But now that I'm looking for it it seems to have gone into hiding. I know Walthers lists some Keystone items but there are still a good number missing.

I know It`s dumb.----Somebody go measure a piece of HOn3 narrow gauge track and tell me the center to center distance between rails in inches.

I just brought a book called 'Mountains of Ash - A history of the Sawmills and Tramways of Warburton and District' by Mike McCarthy ISBN 0 909340 41 2. It is a 300 page illustrated hardbound book on the area I am modelling and where I grew up until I was about 8. I am amazed by and have been enjoying the wealth of pictures and look forward to reading it in detail. There were 66 major mills there before the war and what seems like dozens of trestle bridges and interesting structures. A narrow gauge line ran down our main street! I never knew that. I have a ton of reference material now.

The self centering trucks have been cast with a pair of small ramps between the bolster and the mount. when you pick up a car with self centering trucks, the wheels automatically align with the centerline of the car for easier placement on the track without having to fiddle with the wheels. I find these are difficult to "three point" tripod mount so I don't use them.
