  • SRMW buildings - the prototypes

    Hi

I'm coming to the States for the NMRA convention in July and am a huge SRMW fan. I've booked the tour to see the layout and his clinic is in the plan!

I wanted to know which buildings that the kits were based on were easily accessible to visit and take photos of - there's nothing like the real thing when modelling!

Has anyone visited any or are able to point out any good sites to visit. We've 2 days spare at either end of the convention but I think we're planning on visiting Mystic on one of them. The other day, we're starting off in Lowell and driving over to Hartford so could detour anywhere good.

Love to meet up with the forum crew. If any of you are going - let me know and we can grab a beer or something.

    Kathy,

The Whitinsville Spinning Mill still exists and is easily accessible in the town of the same name

I had just bought the kit at CSS2007 and heard it was nearby. It was cool to see the actual building. It is, in fact, completely restored today. I forget exactly where it is. I know it was within a 3/4 hour drive of the show (In Mansfield, Massachussetts). Just across the Mass/Rhode Island border, if I recall. The same town has a really cool diner in an old rail car...great hearty breakfast with great atmosphere! The whole area looks like a big SRMW or FSM diorama.

From the Cambridge Crossing kit, The station in Cambridge NY is still there (i think).

The Bay State Hotel from the same kit is located in Northampton MA.

          Brilliant,

Thanks alot guys for your help.

I have found Whitinsville and we can detour via it on the way back to Boston. Northampton was almost on the route we were going anyway so no problems detouring there. Cambridge may be a bit far to fit in but I'll see.

It's exciting to visit the real place and then see the models!

          Thanks

            Hi Kathy

I hope Scott Mason sees this post.

When I visited the SWMW factory / shop with Scott, he pointed out some of the Prototype buildings along the way......he was the perfect Host...

It's a very exciting time to visit the "real thing".. I assume you are seeing the F&SM.....

            best wishes

We're definitely seeing the FSM. We're on the Convention tour that goes there... can't wait.

I might ask the question on Scotty's forum as well - thanks for the tip.

              Thanks
