I was thinking about doing something really different from what I have always done. I have a really nice finished HO standard gauge layout done, operates great, looks good, does everything I have always wanted to do. But it is done and I want to build again. I had planned on moving by now but it looks like we will be in the house we are at for a while, and I don't think I can just sit back and not build a layout. so I am considering tearing it down and starting a On30 layout.
I was going to do an On30 layout set in the same region as my HO but today something caught my eye and I started think "what if". What if I model a fictional branch line of a railroad in Mexico. I have been to Mexico a few times and some other Latin American countries and I have always felt that I was stepping into a time machine, in some parts of Mexico time just seems to stand still. I also love the way they just "make do".
I work for a company that builds oleochemical plants all over the world. I was working in Honduras for a while and we were at a point where it was time to pour the footings for a section of the plant. When I checked back on what the progress was I saw that they were mixing the concrete in batches on the side of the road with a shovel and men were carrying it to where it needed to be poured in buckets and wheel barrows. I took a picture because I could not believe it. Later a core sample of that footing looked like a layer cake except the layers were seperated by sand and not frosting, needless to say that the footing never passed inspection. that kind of thing is exactly the charm of Mexico and Latin America that is perfect for a narrow gauge RR.
I have not decided on anything yet but I am playing around with plans and if I find one I like it might just be the end for my HO layout.
Someone of reason my just want to talk me out of this now......anyone.
