Get a few large lumps from local merchant, put in strong bag and wack with hammer.
Sort our all useable pieces into a separate tray then add to tender/bunker one piece at a time using a clear adhesive and a pair of tweezers, I use UHU. Keep adhesive from any plastic parts. Does not take long and the end model looks for superior than using white PVA (Wood glue)
Use real coal, pile it in the tender bunker and around the top areas that you want coal spills. Then with an eye dropper use Floquil Flat Finish #F110015. That's it. If you don't believe it works, try a sample on any plastic. When it dries you won't see any Floquil residue, just a coal pile.

Thanks for the information, I just ordered some of that lump coal because I don't have access to any real coal were I live.
After 30 years of HO modeling I am having a really hard time getting my sense of scale, and my local hobby shops don't carry any O scale stuff for me to look through.
Jeff, it took me more than a year to get 'On30-ized' and see things in perspective after 30 years in N and HO...it's tricky figuring out the different spatial relationships in O when you are so familiar with smaller scales. After getting over the grief of how much space everything takes, I have come to enjoy my 'little big trains' even more for their size, detail and presence. I've also observed visitors seem to appreciate the bigger trains more, as they (and their details) are so much easier to see.

Louis, you just use the clear finish straight out of the bottle and it bonds OK? Does the coal still have the semi-glossy sheen that it often has, almost as if it is wet? I would like to try that when I get to gluing things down...right now everything (including my mind) is still unglued...

Yes Verne, The clear finish straight out of the bottle works like an adhesive, that's all that is needed. And, the coal still keeps its sheen. Now This is a sure thing for HO scale, how it works for the larger scales you would have to trial and error there.
