      Hi:

      I have two questions about the scenery certificate I have been pondering over.

      1. The ratio of the required square footage for HO and N scale is 16/9 which is close to the ratio 160/87. This suggests, to me at least, that the required square footage is inversely proportional to the scale. One could argue on dimensional grounds that the required square footage should be inversely proportional to the square of the scale. Why is 1/scale or something close to it used instead of 1/scale^2?

      2. This question is of more concern to me than the first. I read an internet opinion, reference since lost, that a modeller did not have to have as much detail for N scale as for HO scale to achieve the same points. The justification was that it was more difficult to create for example a realistic station clock in N scale than HO scale. How accurate is this opinion?

        Well, I finished my Scenery on the layout on Sun., wrote the paperwork up and forms filled in on Mon. and got it judged today. 101 points and an AP Certificate to hand on the wall along with the others.

        Since the one judge was the AP Coord for the region, I also handed him my Dispatcher paperwork and after he signs off and files it, that should be my MMR.
        In a time like ours seemings and portents signify. Ours is a generation when dogs howl and the skin crawls on the skull with its beast's foreboding.

              Fantastic! I'm well short of that (started very late) accomplishment, but am happy to see an individual's effort to achieve it. Congrats!!!

                French Drain or Trench Drain

                I am interesting is building a French or Trench Drain to disguise the gap between my permanent layout and a drop-down access plug. If anybody has any information about how to build one of there type drains I would greatly appreciate your input.

                  Many French Drains are only visible at the outlet; the pipe (if used) is placed in the trench, coarse gravel or rock is placed in the trench, the rock is covered with something to keep dirt out of the joints and backfilled with dirt on which grass grows. Sometimes the stone is carried up to the surface and kept clear of vegetation, which would look kind of like a stone path. At the outlet, either the pipe is visible or there's just a small 'spring' on the bank of a ditch or small stream.
