    a little something from merry old england

    hello, id thought id show you what ive been up to in past few days

    having got my order from caboose hobbies ($107 and no custom charge!) i thought id get started on the buildings first

    and so far this is what ive done, i started with the AMB small shop, witch is now a booze outlet (very fitting this being the fist layout of me being 18) and what can i say? such a simple kit, very well made, and only took the best part of an hour to put together



    it was then painted white, and added the glass to the windows, fitted the roof, and added the stick-on paper for the tar papper, then painted with a black-gray mix wash till it looked right

    i know i need to touch up the sides where the black has gotton onto the white, but shall be fixed soon

    next up, a grandtline RAISED PLATFORM WAREHOUSE witch will end up as a factory ( yet to be named, can you come up with some ideas?)

    again a very simple well thought out kit, took the best part of 2 hours to get it ready to be painted, 1st a pirmier coat, the an very very old tin of humbrol blue, and then faded with talcum powder, the roof was paint a gay colour, and the the whole thig was weather with weathering powders



    hope you like, and questions or comments will be most welcome (and i know about the black smug on the white shop

    Two nice looking little builds Andy, you sound a little like me, tear open the box and start at it

    A few details splattered around and maybe some beer/wine/spirits advertising signs on the 'offy' walls will add more interest for little if any cost.

    As for the factory name, what will it be producing? any ideas yet?

      Hi Andy! Thot I'd visit the dark side and check up on you mate!

      You have been busy! And I might add, you have assembled the beginnings

      of two nice structures! Now, get to bobbin' and clutter them up!

        Hello Andy, nice to see your work. Nice models, I like this warehouse and your choice of colors for it. Karl is right, the models need details but I'm sure you'll add some as soon as you can.

          yeah, one problem im having is finding old brewing companys, say form the 1960/1970's so if you guys know any, ill pop them in google, i dont want to do the whole jack d and bud signs that i see alot, its the down side to being in the uk and modling american, the simple things, like old signs, are that much more harder to make when you dont evan know what companys where around then

          as for the factory, im not sure yet,

          as for tearing the box open and making start? hell yeah!, i have nothing alse to do, so why not hehehehe ill be back in tick with a pic of the post office

            as said, there is the post office, nothing magic yet,again its a AMB kit,just need the decal paper and paint the windows etc

              Just Google "1960 brewing" or 1970 brewing and you'll come up with a lot of info and pictures.

                  Try this site for good stuff on breweries: http://www.beerhistory.com/ although it appears that a lot of the stuff might be off-line.

                  Up through the '60s, beer was definitely a local product, despite Bud and other national lines. I remember a lot of local breweries in Pittsburgh in the 60s ("Ft Pitt", "Tech" - my grandfather drank Tech which used the Carnegie tartan for its logo, "Duquesne", etc) and that's after most of the local breweries that were around before Prohibition shut down.

                  But don't forget, the US was 'dry' from 1920 to 1933. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prohibi..._United_States)

                      just had a look on the signs for structures thread, and pretty much with in 10 mins ive found pretty much all the signs i need, haha thanks

                          i got my larger shop today, blairline kits look so good!

                          right jobs for today, paint and put in the windows for the post office

                          but one problem, i still havnt got a name for the town im modling :/ im pants with names, based in iowa, anyone got any ideas? anything funny/silly or just nice sounding,

                          and thanks geezer, but dont stay to long, dont want you "going to the dark side" hehehe

                            Andy,

                            Good to see you keeping busy, I think most of the ON30 guys have HO trains sitting around, I know I have more HO stuff than I should including most of these buildings. Great start for your build.

                            As per naming the town, my wife is from Iowa and they have lots of very small towns with different names I laugh at half the stories because of the names.

                            Try Ottumwa Iowa home to one Radar O'Riely from the TV show M*A*S*H. That should get some interest.

                            As for buildings in town here is what almost every town in Iowa I saw had.

                            Two intersecting main streets with a railroad track running parallel to one of the streets.

                            Between the main street and the tracks.

                            A building like your blue building for feed supplies.

                            A grain elevator

                            A team track to unload farm equipment

                            Main Street

                            A couple of bars

                            Some places to eat / lunch bars

                            Dentist

                            Doctor

                            Hardware store

                            A five and dime store

                            Bank

                            Each town seamed to have a funeral home on the secondary main street???? Plus some larger houses.

                            Smaller houses were on streets behind Main Street.

                            If you need more I can ask the wife.

                              i sapose i should have said, im not doing the whole town, but say just the outskirts of a town, i have a farm supply store (walthers co-op shed) the blue building, diner, grocery store, the drink shop and post office (plus the junk yard and water tower) and the road is going over the line (i.e no running along the tracks) but i like the name i must say

                              ahhh just googled the name, im looking for a made up name, the railroad company name is wiota western (is there the line meets up with what was the R.I in wiota, so i just need a made up name, witch is something pants at, was maybe thinking drew as a simple play on my name, but i still danno
