  • Fine Scale Miniatures "Skinner's Row" Jewel serries No.6

Hi everyone, well just reading the good news that RR Lines is not going to shut down in March, but instead through the help of forum members stay alive for another year.
Hopefully we can find a long term solution in keeping this great forum alive & thriving into the future.
It's also nice that changes have now been made that you can view threads without having to be a member and sign in anymore.
Which was something that I did not like about the upgrade to the forum, when that happened.
As a result of that I stopped doing builds here on this forum.
So in celebration of this good news, I'm going to start a new build here featuring FSM's "Skinner's Row" Jewel serries No. 6
This has to be one of my favorite kits from FSM & George Sellios, so I'm really looking forward to sharing it with you!
I also plan on adding LED lighting to all of the structures and the street where all of these structures will reside on.
So I will begin with the kit & it's contents first.

I hope you will enjoy the build.

Bruce, thank you to you for helping to save this forum!
It's already so nice not to have to sign in to be able to see what's going on here.
That one little thing alone should help tremendously in getting more people involved with this forum.

That looks like an amazing kit. I'll be following.

Curt, it is a great kit! It's like having a street right from George's layout for your very own. Thanks for following!

Great to read that the forums will continue for another year while the pursuit of a permanent solution continues.

Glad to see you building again and sharing your knowledge with us.
I enjoy seeing your breaks from the norm when you change design aspects within your builds.

Rich, it's good to be back sharing my builds again with everyone!
You know me well, I am planning on changing at least one of the buildings in this kit.

I'll be tagging along to see what I can pick up in kit building. This place sure beats RMH. The noise to signal ratio went way up when they came over from the Kalmbach (Model Railroader) forum. Lot of BS not even concerning modeling. Sure drives the forum stats up higher when doing a Google search for the place.

Bernd, I couldn't agree with you more.
Nice to have you along for the build!

Greg, I'm thrilled you're doing another build.
I have that kit and got about a third of the into it before I stopped.
I still have another new kit and who knows, maybe I'll build it one day.
    No promises.
Follow along as my dog and I travel the country in our van.

Rick, I'm thrilled to have you following along with this one!
Just maybe I'll inspire you to get the other 2 thirds done on your Skinner's.

Hi everyone, well I made a trip to the hobby shop yesterday to get some paints that I needed for this first building we are instructed to build in this kit.
Brodies Tavern on the first floor and the Village Print shop on the second floor.
I will be modifying this first structure from it's original design a little.
All of these structures on Skinner's Row are serviced by a rail siding that runs behind each of the buildings.
I am not adding this rail siding to my version of this kit.
So the Brodies Tavern has a covered loading dock which goes right over the track.
    See the photo below.

So since I'm not adding the rail siding I'm going to remove the roof portion of this structure.
Here are the walls that will make up this tavern & the print shop.

Click image for larger version Name:	_DSC2392.jpg Views:	0 Size:	70.9 KB ID:	1103214

This structure also has an elevator, which I assume the print shop uses for it's business upstairs.
Here are the walls that make up the elevator.

Click image for larger version Name:	_DSC2393.jpg Views:	0 Size:	160.7 KB ID:	1103215

So I begin by cutting off the s sides of the covered canopy for the rear loading dock.

Click image for larger version Name:	_DSC2394.jpg Views:	0 Size:	102.1 KB ID:	1103216

The instructions tell us to now measure up from the bottom of these wall sections an 1-7/8" of an inch and mark that line with a pencil.
This line will be the deviding line for the 2 colour paint scheme for this structure.
The top portion will be painted using "Floquils" Depot Buff and the bottom portion will be painted Depot Olive.
I still have a bottle of "Floquils" Depot Buff so that was lucky for me.
However since Floquils paints are no longer available the other colours used on this structure will have to be similar colours from other brands of paint.
So according to my Floquil colour chart - cross reference Depot Buff has a similar colour from "Humbrol" No. 81 Matt Pale

For the bottom portion of the walls I did not have the "Floquils" Depot Olive so I used " Vallejo" Flat Green 70.968
I started with the depot buff first, painting up to my light pencil line and using the closest clapboard to the pencil line as a guide.

I then did the Flat green on the lower sections of walls.

Next I spray painted the backside of the tavern only wall with flat black paint.

The instructions then suggested to add the nail holes into the wall using a pounce wheel figure ! of the instructions show you where those lines go.
I used a steel ruler to make certain my nail hole were straight. It's also a good idea to practice using a pounce wheel on a scrap piece of wood to get the feel of it.
You don't want to push down to hard or to soft, so it's good to practice on some scrap first.

This is how my walls came out looking after I was done pouncing with the wheel.

Next I sorted out what windows & doors that would get used on this particular structure and painted them.
The instructions suggest using "Polly Scale" Zinc chrome primer. Once again you can no longer get "Polly Scale" paints.
So I used "Vallejo" Burnt Red 70.814 for my widows & doors and 1/16 sq. corner trim.

I will drybrush these widow & doors with white paint to help weather them more once they have dried.
Here's how this slightly changed colour combination will eventually look on this structure.
