  • A Tribute To Mike Goad (Tyson Rayles)

Form member Phillip sent us the following link from another Forum that announces the passing of Mike Goad who we know as Tyson Rayles.

    https://bigbluetrains.com/showthread.php?tid=9947

Although we have not been able to verify this from any other source, we do know that Mike has been very ill, and he did not respond to a PM I sent him a few weeks ago.

Mike joined the RR-L forum way back in June, 2002, and he was one of the first Forum members to welcome me when I joined a year later. His was the longest serving of our Forum's Moderators.

Mike lived in the mountains of western North Carolina, about 45 minutes from Asheville. Back in the early days of the Forum, posting photos was a chore for Mike whose only access was via a dial-up modem. One of his first 'photo rich' threads was one of the first 'layout visit' threads that I ever saw, and I thought "Wow, I would never have been able to see that layout if I was not a member of this forum". That layout was the Coon Creek logging empire created by Louis Ullian in O/On3. Here is the link:

Mike modeled in N-Scale and his layout build thread was titled "Nantahala Midland V 3.0" which he started on January 20, 2007. It eventually contained 113 pages of his modeling efforts. His layout represented railroading in the "hollers of Appalachia" and his scenery work absolutely nailed it! One of my favorite photos that Mike posted in this thread is this one which Mike graciously allowed me to use in a clinic on blending foregrounds and backgrounds.

Mike's last post was in a "Moderators Only" area of the Forum to let us know that he was fine after the hurricane. That post was on October 10, 2024.

Mike had a great sense of humor, was a terrific modeler, and a good friend.

Rest easy Mike. Great dude and modeler. He was a man of many talents.

A tribute to Tyson I found. The comical scene was on his Southern RR.

That is sad news; RIP Mike. When I first joined I was doing a micro layout which I posted. Even though it was a little crude
Mike always commented even if it just with an emoji.

            Bruce,

Thank you for the tribute to Mike. I enjoyed seeing his modeling; it was an inspiration when I tried my hand at some N scale modeling a couple of years ago. He did things in N scale that few attempt or achieve in HO. He was always encouraging to others. Sad news indeed.

That is very sad news indeed. Always enjoyed Mikes work over the years on his N scale Nantahala Midland layout. At one stage he even dabbled in On30.
His N scale layout was one of the finest I've seen. Great looking structures and his scenery was amazing, especially all the trees he did.
He was always encouraging of everyone's work, even if in later years it was mostly just smiley faces. He certainly pushed me along with my N scale endeavors.
Will be missed by all forum members.

                  RIP mate.

I haven’t been on line for a few days and just read this sad news. I enjoyed Mike’s sense of humor and seeing pictures if his n scale layout.

Before each flight, make sure that your bladder is empty and
                      your fuel tanks are full.
