  • Thursday at the morgue

3 degrees and severe clear in lower mid Michigan after 1% of possible snow and snow all day yesterday, maybe an inch here, upwards of 6” along the W shore.

Eggs, grits biscuits and sausage with greasy gravy and a pot of Gandy Dancer’s Thermite brew. OJ, diet and leaded soda pop for those so inclined.

Tried to sign up with a different ID to see if I could get here on my iPad. All went well until it said it would email me a link…. oh well. I’m here squinting at the iPhone.

Off to take a drive when the Doll arises from the ashes…

Good morning Karl and the rest of the crew. I'll need some of that Gandy Dancer’s Thermite brew this morning, Karl. It is on of those days where the Brain Fog is not burning off as fast as one would hope.

Last night we had the coldest temps of the winter (1 degree at wake-up). A couple of inches of snow expected tomorrow.

I did manage to put in an hour or so at the modeling bench yesterday and hope to do a bit better than that today.

A member of our NMRA Division e-mailed me that he would like me to head over to see if his layout work qualifies for the Golden Spike Award. I'll give him a call this morning to set up a date and time.

On the "keep the forum going front", I'm within striking distance of having enough donated money to keep us going for another year. We would have to use that year to come up with a long-term solution. I'm not really clear if this is what members want. Input appreciated.

All right, giving this a bit of thought. Have at it. If I like what I see down the road I'll have to rethink my investment in the forum. I want a sure thing and something that runs a little faster than the speed it's running now. Comparing the other two forums I'm on, one being more of a private funded forum and one that is funded through a magazine venture, I know this forum can run faster.

Can one of you Admins or Moderators explain why there are always a large group of "visitors" on board. I don't see that on the other forums? No BS on this question as I can find the answer from somebody else if I have to.

Bernd, I'm not sure about the size of those 'visitors', but will check with Joe. With the old software we always attributed them to search engine 'bots' mining the forum. I do know that back then, if you used Google to search for pictures of something like "Camelback Locomotives" or "Ash Pits", many of the photos produced were from the RR-Line Forums. BTW, one concern mentioned recently has been the inability of non-members to see the Forum's content. I talked to Joe yesterday and he will make the content visible - most likely today or tomorrow.

Good morning, all. The wind is still roaring over the NH seacoast but sun warms us a bit between the clouds. We walked through my woods late yesterday, all the water bodies thoroughly frozen, none of the seasonally wet places show ice. On the computer now, won't come back to it after lunch. Hope that results in model RR work.

In reality this currently the only free forum I know of. Recently, the O gauge forum, been a member for eleven years. If you want to participate now by commenting in a thread, you must be a paid E or paper magazine subscriber. The Model Railroad Hobbyist, site likewise is free, but if you want the real good content, a subscription to Running Extra mag is recommended. $29.99 yearly. The O Gauge script is $39.99. Each one has it's certain benefits. However, I still find the best actual modeling on this forum first. Second would be MRH. Clearly, if watchers want to participate, Some monetary cost should be involved for all.

My experience doesn't match Ted's. I'm a member here, ModelersForum and MRH. I'll contribute to each, but I'm not a 'subscriber' (i.e. not -required- to pay) to any of them.
