  • Playing with fonts

While waiting for the epoxy to cure on the Lamson build, I spent some time looking through my collection of fonts and some ones I found on-line.

Somewhere I have a 3rd car that I lettered, but basically I need to pick a font and probably get custom decals made. Opinions sought on the choices above. I think I used Railfonts "Clinch" (Clinchfield RR) for those cars, but I'm not sure.

Dave, FWIW Using Railroad Roman 1916 with all caps would be my first pick for your time frame.
That said, any of the other fonts, EXCEPT Rockwell or Baskerville, would look OK too.

A B&M fan has digitized the railroad's official font (Plan K-10 in the standard plan book). It's too modern for your purposes, Dave, probably no earlier than 1930..

Dave, who do you plan to use for your custom decals?
        It's only make-believe

The RR 1916 looks too stretched out for boxcar lettering. I haven't tried playing with kerning to see if I can 'shrink' that.

I haven't decided. I figure to first design my sheet, and then shop around.

Dave, the fonts can easily be compressed to fit the space you want. The top group is the same size like you posted. The lower secong group was "squeezed" a bit in width, but it retains its original height.

I was planning ahead and looking at some custom decal suppliers for my Gulf Coast & Western. I favored:

              1. Circus City Decals and 2. Bill Brillinger at Precision Design Company. I'm sure these are on your list. Pricing may dictate my choices.

For what ever it is worth, I like the Railfonts "Clinch" (Clinchfield RR).

I played with the spacing/kerning a bit on the RR Roman 1916 font. This would be the default lettering on house cars.

I'm inclined towards the Clinch[field] font. Engravers MT comes in second. (This is a font from the 1920s patterned after 19th century fonts. It's widely available in high quality versions from Monotype.)

Has anyone done a sheet with a custom decal printer? Could you share your sheet layout?
