  • Scratch Building a Flat Iron Corner Structure.

A few months ago I was asked to participate in a Winter Build Challenge and I agreed to do so. I'm to the point on my layout that I need to only build a kit/model that I need on the layout. I really don't have the time to build a kit that will become a shelf orphan.

My space is limited and it is shaped liked a flat iron. Hence, the title of a Flat Iron Corner Structure/Building.

The available real estate for the structure is approx. 25 square inches.

A flat iron building is one that resembles an old iron from the turn of the 20th Century. The next two photos are of a flat iron which I got from my grandmother. I've been using this flat iron as a door stop for the past 50 years.

The third photo is of an archival photo of a flat iron building.

This block of real estate is on the Dixie Hwy. that is the main road into and out of Tahope. The front property line is on a slight curved section of the highway.

I will scratch build a structure to fit the space with a sidewalk on all sides.

I made a paper template of the space and then drew in the sidewalk areas.

I then used the paper template as a guide and did the same on a piece of 1/16" thick basswood from Northeast Scale Lumber.

The piece of wood I had on hand wasn't wide enough so I glued on a section at the top (curved portion) for the base.

Using my paper template as a guide, I used a #2 pencil and drew the sidewalk and expansion joints.

I then used one of my pointed punches to scribe the pencil lines to give the base some relief.

I used Floquil Aged Concrete and painted the basswood base. The paint is dry, but I'll wait for the paint to cure prior to adding weathering.

I removed the corner as I want a small section for a small tree or bush.

The actual footprint of the structure is seen in the interior sides of the sidewalks.

Again, here are the two photos for your convenience.

The flat iron building will measure, in HO scale feet as follows.

            Front wall - 40 feet.

            Rear wall - 36 feet.

North end wall - 7 feet.

My plan is for the front and narrow side front to look like a Victorian Storefront.

I used a plain #2 pencil and ruler to draw my store front design. No CAD Program was harmed in this endeavor.

Will you make the track side customer-facing, or for deliveries and trash?

Good to seeing it come to life. The final outcome is outstanding looking on your layout Tom.

Good afternoon Curt, Interesting project you started here. This is going to be fun to follow along. One Question, how many stories will it be.

Fun fact: The Flatiron Building in NYC is one of my all time favourate buildings and is actually my home screen on my US phone.

                      James,

Thank for looking in on this one. The track side wall will have a door for garbage/deliveries. Many deliveries will be done through the front storefront.

Also, I'll have two external stairs to access the two floors.

                        Curt,

Thanks for the advanced compliment. I still need to build it. I do think it will fit perfectly in this location.

                          Ron,

Thanks for checking on the Flat Iron build. I'm happy to have you following along on the adventure. So it will fit in with the other structures in the area, it will be three stories.

The lower floor a cafe/store with two upper floors for railroad workers to rent rooms.

Tom this looks like a really neat build. That's what I like about scratch building, you can make it
to fit your space. Like the concept of the Victorian store front to set the first floor apart from
                            the rest of the building.

Should be another great build Tom. These narrow structures are always interesting to look at.
The New York one is the most famous, but there are plenty of others around. The one in Toronto, Canada is particularly nice, and San Francisco too.
When space is at a premium on the prototype and your layout, it's a logical solution.

I also have one of those old irons, and it has been in the family forever. And like you and I guess everyone else, we all use them as door stops.
