  • The 2025 Winter Modeling Challenge Main Thread

This winter’s challenge will once again give members plenty of leeway when choosing projects. Let's review the choices.

This winter’s challenge will focus on one specific and a few broader categories giving members plenty of leeway when choosing projects.
    1. Let’s start with the specific modeling category: Stations: Passenger, Freight or a station that handles both. For that matter, Gas Stations, Bus Stations Radio/TV Stations or Stations in any form are welcome.. Many of us have one or more Station Kits on the shelf, so why not take one down and build it? If you prefer, design and scratch build one. Stations make great models for interior lighting and detailing, so go wild!
Now for a few broader categories.
    1. Finish One Up. If you are like me, you have one or more projects that you have yet to complete. You could use this opportunity to pull it out, put it on your modeling bench and finally complete the job.
    2. Pick One In Your “Wheelhouse”. We know that there are members who focus their modeling attention in one or two specific directions. Martin loves to salvage O-Scale rolling stock. Lou just loves to ‘slice & dice’. Of late, I have been building models from old (often obscure) kit manufacturers. You get the idea. So, choose a project that is in your particular “Wheelhouse” and have at it.
    3. Try Something New. Tired of your "Wheelhouse"? Then take this opportunity to try something new. Model in a medium you haven't used before. If you usually model in wood, try modeling in plaster, styrene, or resin, for example. Your wheelhouse is modeling structures? Try modeling some motive power or rolling stock. Again, you get the idea.
We hope that you will join in and help make the Annual Challenge a success!

This thread is where participants can discuss which of the choices, he/she is choosing, comment on other members' posts, post progress photos along the way, or even document the entire build. If you wish, you can start a separate build thread and just post updates in this one.

We will once again use April 15th as the end date of the challenge.

Final photos of your project(s) can be posted in this thread:

I'll be joining in - probably in the "My Wheelhouse" category, with the 'Wheelhouse" being building a 'vintage' kit. I'll probably wait until after Christmas to pick a specific kit since Santa might add one to my collection.

Well I guess I may as well jump right in. I'll be doing #1: finishing one up. I'm building a new On30 layout called the Pratts Hollow Short Line RR so this will be my next scene:

Found this on the internet some time ago and knew I wanted to model something similar putting my own twist on it; not sure who created this but I thought it was way cool and would fit in nicely with my layout theme.

The thing is I wanted a very rural, very basic, and very simple sawmill. Started with a 4x12 inch piece of 1/8th plexiglass to build on, this way I can sit at my bench and work on it. Going to build a small shed on the right along with using a "sled" for the boiler and a vertical steam engine I bought from Wiseman and never used. I may rebuild a narrower sled for the boiler and steam engine.

The white paper in front will be the carriage drive, which I still need to build and will be about 22 ft long. I did build the carriage base already which is 11x5 ft since I've ordered a carriage kit from Sierra West along with a log tuner kit just for the extra pulleys. The carriage was built using 6x6's for the frame and 3x1o's for the top; all the wood was grained using a wire plumbers brush then colored with Rembrandt raw Sienna and clear alcohol. I already have the saw blade so I"ll be able to build the saw shortly. The shed I may build as a 10x8 or possibly a 12x8 depending what I decide on for the sled size. There should be room for a good amount details added after I get the basics done.

So next I'm going to build the Shed for this project to give me a better idea of space. Also I'm building this scene in my thread in the On30 forum but will post in both places. Thanks for stopping by for a look-see and for any ideas you may have.

I'll jump in as soon as I finish my non-modeling gift project. I propose to finish (decal rivets, repaint, letter, weather) my HO brass scratchbuild of a PRR class FM 40' flatcar. I will post most of whatever progress I make in the 2021 build thread ( https://railroad-line.com/node/40780 ) with updates here.

I'm going to jump after I've finished building several Proto 2000 53'6" gondolas for our club layout. I'm thinking of doing a kit in my wheelhouse but for now reserve the right to change my mind.

I'm in. Finish one up topic:- I will build two boats and a structure for my Mexican mini layout extension and finish scenicing that. So that should keep me busy for a few weeks.
Must be done by March as I have to display it at an exhibition.

And I had better build some sort of station as that topic was my suggestion. Thinking a gas station.

And I don't know what is meant by the "wheelhouse" . Can someone explain.

"My wheelhouse" means something you've got experience in, knowledge about, authority over etc. I don't recall hearing it before this decade, but Wiktionary has a citation from 2009. Not a term I use myself.

Thanks for the explanation James. I assumed that's what it meant, but seems a strange term. Thought maybe it's an American thing.
The only wheelhouse I'm familiar with is on a large boat or ship.

I'll be finishing one off. Not quite ready to start finishing yet...

                  Cheers, Mark.

I think I'll also jump in on the one on the "Finish One Up" category as I have a number of unfinished projects. I think it will be the Ambroid O scale kit of 40' vertical rib boxcar kit. Hopefully I'll get it finished before the deadline.

I'll like to play too. I guess from my Wheelhouse category because I've worked with resin before. I plan to build a Passenger set of three cars. One is a kit (the only) done by The Mogul Men for V&T #1 combine and two kits from a Shapeways Marketplace, Crownpoint Engineering, for V&T coach 3&4. But I do have a question; As I plan to document this build in my usual semi-tutorial way; Do you want me to post it all here of just post update shots from time -to-time?

                        Time for a update:

This is just a simple shed, made from 6x6’s for the frame and 1x10’s for the boards, that tools and/or supplies would be stored in. I did add some brown chalks just to tone down the green a little. The roof is made from 100 grit sandpaper; thought I'd give it a try. Since the area is quite small I used this water tank from the parts bin to set on top of the roof; need every square foot I can find. At the moment it's hasn't been glued down yet in case I have to make adjustments after the boiler is in place. I also added a horseshoe tipped up just for good luck over the door.

The window is a spare I had from SW and thought this would be a good place to use it since it would be very noticeable by the dried up creek bed. I really like the fact that it can be modeled open. There is a piece of black paper behind it so it looks dark inside. Also added one coke-cola sign for some added interest. Having the water tank on the shed roof also adds more interest to a simple building.

Next I'll be working on building a new, smaller, and narrower sled for the boiler and steam engine. I also received the parts from Sierra West for the carriage platform and pulleys for the saw; looks like I have some work to do. Thanks for looking in.

I'll get mine started. My build will fit into the "Build One In Your Wheelhouse" category. As I mentioned, I have been building some of the older kits and this one is a classic.

However, I will not be building it as a 'haunted house'. Instead, I will model mine as a well-kept house called "Quinn's Quiet Corner B&B" after our third oldest Great Grandchild - a young lady named Quinn. I will do all the build here in the Challenge Thread.

I'll probably do a wood passenger car kit, something I haven't tried before. I'm just waiting for some parts. But I also have the Lamson & Goodnow kit to finish.
