  • HO Arbour 0-4-0t kit build

    Hi All
been awhile. I'm finishing my reefer with decals but could not wait as my fingers been itching to start on a locomotive kit. So I started on a Arbour A3a 0-4-0t kit.
I should have started on the Locomotive Co 2-8-0 kit but I thought to start realively easy with the Arbour kit instead and do some training on it.

The Youtuber Darth Santa Fe has some videos on building the 0-4-0 with tender version which is a great help during the build.

I started by removing all the parts and immediately started on the chassie. The wheels where out of gauge so I had to press the axles out a little on both wheelsets.
The bearings where not wide enough and the chassie too wide at the axles so some filing had to be done. I also had to use a 1/8 drill to carefully drill out the slots to fit the axles. Not much was needed and hope I kept the slots parallell to each other. After the drilling I did some grinding using the end of the drillbit imagining preparing the bearing surfaces and making them smoother. Next will be using some very fine grinding compound as Autosol to get an even better surface.

Here are some photos of the work sofar.

The model when finished will be very nice. My aim is to find some photos of the original paint scheme which probably was quite elaborate with lining and lots of brass.

    Håkan,

Looks like a challenge. As long as it rolls smoothly you should be good.

      Håkan,

It seems like your Arbour kit has some of the same issues that Darth experienced. It is good seeing you overcome them.

Thanks Mike and Bruce. It has the same issues but relatively straightforward overcoming them.
I found my paste (Flitz) which I used to improve the bearing surfaces using a 1/8" drill.

The motor and siderods have been installed and tested out. To my astonishment it doesn’t have any serious binds at all. A slight bind backwards but smooth forward. Here is a video of it testing on the bench.

The bench test looks good, Håkan.

I noticed that the motor oscillated back and forth when running backwards, but no motion going forward. Is that what you are calling your bind?

                Thanks Bruce.
Bernd its a small hesitation each rotation going backwards. The motor is quite weak so its hard to test it. I'm thinking of changing the magnet as Darth Santa Fe did to get a stronger motor.

Ok, sounds good. A stronger magnet might just do it.

Here is an update on the build. The mechanism has been assembled and had its difficulties as Darth Santa Fe had with his. The wire to the steamchest had to be modified to be able to clear the forward crankshafts screws. I did it a little differently than Darth. I had as Darth to do some extensive filing to the chassi to get the firebox sides to clear the inside of the drivers.
It now runs smooth without any binds. I ordered some stronger magnets 10x10x3 for the motor to see if it helps give better strength.

After the mechanism I have worked on the superstructure. Much filing and swearing was needed. For example when boiler and chassie was assembled the front of the boiler rode approx. 1 -1.5mm higher than the back part. I had to so some expensive filing on the cylinder to lower the boiler from its initial ludicrous height. To backdate it I mounted a larger brass headlight.

Assembly was made using a mix of slow temp soldering, acc glue, epoxy and screwing the components together. As one needed taps and I doesn’t have UNC(?) 00-80 taps or its like I substituted to metric instead mainly M1.2, M1.4 and M2 screws.

Here are some photos of it sofar.

You're making good progress, Håkan. It's a nice looking loco. Your careful work is paying off.

Howdy Håkan, the tank loco is looking terrific. The new magnets should make it a more powerful puller with all the model's weight. Have fun, mike

Thanks Guys! I have some detailing still and I need to figure out on how to mount a decoder. Then its off to the paintshop.

I remember looking at an Arbour 4-4-0 kit, loving the look but being very afraid of the construction... So watching you -make this work- has been fascinating.

Håkan, Great work. I watched the video of it running and I'm very impressed. I'm always impressed when someone can successfully builds one of these. I also appreciate you sharing how qyou did it.

Thank you Bob, its been busy adding DCC with sound to the locomotive which was very tricky. I'm also painting and decaling it. Using K4 PRR decals which somehow doesn’t work that great with me. They are thick and doesn’t snuggle down that good using softening solution. It came out somewhat good anyway. I'll post some photos of it tonight.
