  • A Second King Post Bridge Build (20 Year Celebratin Challenge)

Way back in 2006, I did a build thread on a King Post Bridge. Here is the link to that thread: https://railroad-line.com/node/2227.

In that thread I included a link to plans for the bridge that I found on the Tennessee Dept. of Transportation web site. Sadly that set of plans no longer shows up.

I now need a King Post Bridge two feet longer and two feet wider than the last bridge.

    So, here we go.

With the older bridge in the background, here are the plans for the new bridge. The first bridge was designed for vehicular traffic, and so had deck planking. The new bridge will be for the railroad, and will only have RR ties on the deck. (The first bridge was built to fit against the backdrop, so I had no room for the diagonal brace on the truss.)

Thanks for checking in, Jerry. This should be a very quick build.

Since you're building a new bridge... One thing that bothered me about the previous bridge is that I thought it was a bit too long, that the ends of the bridge sat too far back on the rock. That's something to consider as you work out the new bridge. The other thing would be to consider if you need heavier timbers for the railroad.

Dave, I had widened the gorge a bit - in fact a bit too much. This bridge will have its end timbers just sitting hear the edge of the gorge. I did 'up the dimensions of the timbers a bit, too - and added three joists that will sit just under the rails as was the cast in the Hunter Line Queen Post Bridge.

      Bruce,

Re-using the old king truss was a noble effort, but it looks like a new one will reign supreme.

Mike, an HO loco almost touched the railings on both sides of the old bridge. I will still use it, most likely on the upper HOn3 Slate Run RR.

Nice build to follow Bruce. Looking forward to your progress here.
[Edit] Bruce, I just checked my files and found this from your old build. Is this the plans???
That was back in the day when I was only a lurker. I liked your build so much I kept it on file.

There is a certain 'cute factor' at play with a little King Post Bridge, Karl.

Thanks, Carl. Bridges are always good for 'photo ops' and I intend to have more of them on the new layout. (The old layout had 3.)

If I’m not mistaken there can only be one King in a domain…you’re going to have to demote the smaller one… pretender to the throne…

Interesting project that should be a fun build.

Karl, I could call the smaller bridge the Prince Harry Bridge.

All the wood needed for the build is cut and in the A&I mix. I added 'wood grain' before cutting.

I always lay the wet wood on a piece of waxed paper so that the 'juice' is not wicked away from the wood while drying.

Very nice start and I'll be following along.

I'm following along too. I'm sure after building the first bridge, this one will be an easier build.

For sure, George. It is nice having the old one to check measurements and see how I glued certain timbers in place back then.

It is handy having the old bridge on hand to check timber dimensions and to remind myself how I glued certain timbers in place back then.
            Working...
