  • New York, Vermont & Northern RR receives new Alco FA-1's

A set of A-B-B-A Alco's arrived at the roundhouse today. They were purchased from the Gulf Coast & Western RR. They came undecorated, which pleased the management very much since no stripping of paint would be necessary.

Now the dilemma is what color to paint them. The old style?

    Or the new style.

Or do I do a set of each one and run them together? I need to sleep on this.

The green and yellow with black strip color scheme came from the old Rochester Telephone Co. That was their service trucks color. The red and gray with white lighting strip is stolen from the NYC paint scheme.

The painting won't happen for a while. I need to experiment with some of the new paints and see which one's I'll favor.

And a fine looking set of locomotives they are. Man they look great all hooked-up. Sorry I can't help with which paint scheme to go with as I like them both.

I'm leaning very hard on doing one set in the old paint scheme and one set in the new paint scheme.

Alco FA/B power is the ultimate childhood memory. Lightning bolts and cigar bands. There are close to a dozen around the Kentucky Southern including this A-B-B-A -1 version set, each with Loksound.

An impressive lash up, Bernd. I like your idea of painting the two different liveries.

From my experience doing my set of FA/B-1s, plan on getting into the trucks and replacing gears. I did 7 units in total and 27 of 28 axles had cracked gears..all 28 were replaced, gears cleaned and lightly re-lubed. Some had enough of the old peanut butter goo in them to make Reese’s peanut butter cups. I use A-line gear sets, some use athearn. Each package has 6 axles worth, $8-10. Easy enough to do, be sure and recheck gage with NMRA tool or similar of your choice. I also replaced the electronics, added LED headlights and mars lights and Loksound boards and sugar cube speakers.

Have fun. I simplified the paint process using the single color, the last of my Scalecoat Southern RR green, and lettered with Highball Graphics decals of my design.

                Hi Tom,

It'll be a while before they get painted. To many started projects ahead of them. I'm sure you can understand that situation. There'll be a thread when I do get to painting them. I'm sure it'll be an adventure with the newer paints. I need to practice some before I paint them.

                  Bernd~,
Obi-wan... I'm liking the 4 unit lash-up. Looking forward to the unveiling for sure. If I might offer (since you threw it out there on the painting). I would stick to thinking like a railroad would. {for example, you remember L&N had a million different paint schemes} because each of the shops that painted did their own version with subtle differences.

I would think in those terms. Since you've already came up with two different practices, I would continue the trend. Something with a lightning stripe, but yet the color scheme says these are Alco FA1'a coming down the tracks.

Well, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it sir! '
                  Thanx Thom...

                    Hi Thom,

I've got a set of FA's, A-B-A, made by ROCO of Austria, a set of FA's from Life-Like A-B, a set of three A shells and two B shells from I don't know who, and a set of A-A Shark's made by ROCO. All are un-decorated. So I have lots of engines to try a paint scheme on them. I will be sticking with a lighting stripe paint scheme. I kind of like your idea of several different colors utilizing a lighting stripe.

                    Thanks for the idea.
