    The 2023 “Twenty Year Celebration” Challenge Main Thread

    As 2022 comes to a close, we also see the completion of 20 years of existence for the Railroad-Line Forums. We will acknowledge that accomplishment with a "Twenty Year Celebration Challenge". The Challenge will start with the posting of this thread and end on April 30th. As has been our practice, the Challenge will include choices of categories, so there should be something for everyone.

    Our choices this year are:
    1. Build a structure kit and make it “your own” (What do we mean by “your own”? Change it up a bit. For example: swap out roofing materials; add a small addition or loading dock; detail the interior, add lighting… You get the idea.) EXTRA INTEREST POINTS if the kit is an “oldie” – let’s say that it pre-dates the laser cut era.
    1. Build or detail a locomotive or piece of rolling stock. (Pretty self-explanatory.)
    1. Build a resin or white metal vehicle kit. (Think of Jordan or Sylvan for resin, and such makers as Wheel Works; Lee Town, S.S. Ltd, or Walthers for white metal.)
    1. Scratch Building/Kit Bashing. Build any type of model from scratch (including 3-D Printing), or take the parts from a commercial model kit and use those parts (or some of them) to construct a new model in remembrance of Art Curren.
    1. Layout Project. If you have been wanting to attack some project on your layout, why not do it as part of this Challenge.
    1. Animation. Animate a model or a scene on your layout or module.

    We hope that we get great participation in this year's Challenge. We all have many options from which to choose!

    This thread is where participants can discuss which of the choices, he/she is choosing, comment on other members' posts, post progress photos along the way, or even document the entire build. If you wish, you can start a separate build thread and just post updates in this one.

    A broad challenge with at least 4 categories that cover things I need to do. I'm off to the attic to contemplate what should come first.

      I'm in, maybe I'll finish this one...

      I'm going for option '1' ....

      Ohhh , well dang it, they're all labeled as option '1', hmmm, I guess I'm going to be busy for a few months.

      I guess 3 months is plenty of time to build all 6 option '1's ....

      Time will tell.

        I wrote it up in Word and then just copied and pasted it into the thread. In Word, they are numbered properly.

        Anyway, you all can picture them numbered from 1 to 6.

            Bruce,

            They all look good, in a couple cases with interesting wrinkles such as "make it your own." The possibilities are particularly well thought out, in my opinion. It's going to be hard to chose.

              I'm debating whether to join or not. I know I won't be finishing any of challenge projects just because I've got several non-model projects I need to do also. The kitchen cabinet comes to mind. But I do have three legitimate projects that would fit 4,5, & 6. So, I may join in and post progress reports in the Challenge thread while posting the details in my railroad thread. I've got two days yet to decide whether I'm in or not.

                I'm with you.
                I will be entering as well, but not sure what I will finish. So many unfinished projects already.
                I think I'll start at one and see how many I can complete.

                  Hmmmmm.........so when am I not doing the 1st one,

                  In the case of #2 --> instead of resin or white metal, what about a 3D printed kit???

                  #3 -- generally redundant to #1 -- when am I not scratchbuilding rolling stock?

                  May have a structure that qualifies for #3 as well.....

                  Off to the shop!

                  Well that certainly is a nice list of choices. Since I sat out last year, starting a new layout, I thought I'd jump in
                  and have a go at it.
                  With that in mind, here are my choices: 2) Build or detail a locomotive or piece of rolling stock.
                  5) Layout Project. If you have been wanting to attack some project on your layout.

                    OK, you have my interest and consider me in, BUT you all know there are several unfinished threads I have started that never got finished.
                    I will try my best to complete what I begin here. Let's say #i and # 4 (not necessarily in that order)...

                        Although most of this winter's modeling time will be devoted to working on the layout (# 5), I will start by building this Lee Town HO Scale 1930's vintage Mack Heavy Duty Wrecker cast in white metal.

                        For those not familiar with Lee Town, they were out of Belvidere, NJ. Here is their logo. So this one fits in Choice #3.

                          Back here in late December, I thought that I would build this truck as part of the Challenge plus do some work on my new layout. Now that the scenery bug has bitten, I don't want to divert my attention from the layout to attack this kit. So, building the Lee Town Mack Truck will be but back on the shelf for now. Back to the layout now.

                        Mine being a Kilborn Marine Sales kit by JL Innovative Design, and making it a service for boats on the waterfront, changing the kit layout design.
                        and,
                        #3 Build a resin or white metal vehicle kit.
                        Mine being a white metal kit from Alloy Forms.

                          The first, second, fourth and fifth '#1" are all things I accomplished in 2022. It was a productive year for me. The third #1 will be hard to do on my 1890s era layout, but maybe I'll do a Jordan or Berkshire wagon kit "in lieu of."

                          I do have an animation project I've been pondering for a couple of years, I'm still trying to figure out how to get a servo to do 4" of vertical movement through a very narrow tube. The late Don Ball gave me some great ideas there, I just haven't worked them through. (Suggestions and pointers definitely appreciated!)
