  • Layout Animation

Many that have been following my "Rock Crusher" project may wonder why the fascination with animation. I've always wanted to animate the loading of scale model cars and the moving to another facility to unload or trans load into another gauge. Coal mines and a quarry operation come to mind. There are many others but these two are the main focus of my interest. I've done years of research into how the real one's operated. I started experimenting with a conveyor system but couldn't find any material that was pliable enough for a scale HO conveyor. Then in the beginning of 2016 a post in Model Railroad Hobbyist forum got me really inspired, plus it solved some of my questions. If you're interested to see what piqued my interest, here's a direct link to that post.

Mario & BIce are the builders and owners of this diorama. It is a great inspiration to me to build that animated quarry.

If you don't want to go and read a lengthy post here's a two-minute video showing their diorama at Trainsmania.

With your talents working with metal, I have no doubt you can accomplish your goal of animation. Looking forward to this adventure.

Thanks for the compliment. It'll be a slow uphill battle, but I'll keep at it in between other ongoing projects.

So far, the only thing I've done to my B&M Eastern Route that might be called 'animation' is the signals. I need to do one set of crossing gates, and if I live long enough to build the Merrimack River drawbridge, I might try to animate the swing span, at least the smash-board gates approaching each abutment. I don't recall anyone doing lifting miter rails on a swing bridge, but that's what most prototypes used...

Are there any close-up pictures of the prototype? I'd be interested in seeing some pictures of what that looks like.

Here's something fun to animate. It's on an Australia sugar cane railroad.
