  • Liverpool & Manchester (Stephenson's Rocket) Carriages - 1/26 scale

I'm going to scratchbuild a 1st class & 3rd class carriage in 1/26 scale, to match a Minicraft 1/26 scale kit I built of the 1929 Stephenson Rocket loco I built some years back.
This is for a family friend.

Hopefully they come out something like these full size replicas.

Some here may remember when I did the build of Minicraft's 1/26 scale Stephenson's Rocket, back in 2015 - 2016. A very nice kit.
That was for our son-in -laws father. He has always wanted some carriages to go with the loco, but it has taken me this long to finally get around to it.

    Full build here:- https://railroad-line.com/node/34294.

I will be using styrene for the build.

      Sourcing wheels:-
I figured the hardest part would be to get suitable wheels. They are not normal later period train wheels, and I couldn't find anything suitable, and I figured they would be very difficult to scratchbuild.
Some years back I bought a Grandtline Delrin Sprocket 36 tooth, 1/4' bore. I don't know why, and just put it in my stash.
Maybe it was meant to be, as I looks a perfect match for the rocket L&M carriage wheels.
And it scales correctly too. So the stars must have aligned.

I needed 8 of them, and the problem was I could only find one person that had them, lives in Wales, but when all the Covid stuff happened, he wasn't going anywhere near a post office to send them to me.
2 years later, I finally got around to ordering them, and some extras for myself, as I am going to build a Rocket loco for myself.

So here's what I've done with them. Cut off all the teeth, and sanded smooth.

Then used two layers of styrene strips to make the flange.
Two layers were used, as one thick one wasn't flexible enough, so first layer was .75mm, and the second one 1mm thick

        Interesting project.
Clever how you sourced the wheels and then modified them.

          Rob,

Love your technique method of making a flanged wheel. Now, if you had a lathe you could have turned the flange part.

Neat idea, it is a long run from "N" scale though.
Love what your doing with the wheels from sprockets. I never thought of that.
Looking forward to your progress Rob.

                Robert,

I'm hooked on this scratch build and will be following along with the rest.

Great project, Rob. I do remember that Rocket build thread. Clever solution for the wheels for sure.

Thanks for joining in Rick, Bernd, Louis, Mike, Tom, Bruce Ray & Carl. Should be an Interesting project.
Now that the wheels are done, I hope the rest should be a lot easier.
But will have some fiddly bit to do, as those Victorians certainly liked to embellish things.
And researching to get correct dimensions etc hasn't been easy. Lucky I like doing a lot of research, but it is very time consuming.

So all the wheels are now done.

A couple of years back I found some good pics online, and was able to resize one to what I believed would be pretty close to the right size.
This then sort of gives me a reference template. I'll discuss this more tomorrow, and about some luck I've had recently.
Here's two of my wheels laid over the the photo wheels. Just about spot on.

I wouldn't just about, I'd say right spot on. Neat idea sizing a picture to a known part to get the rest of the dimensions spot on. A little trick I'll need to remember.

Right out of my play book. That's the way to do it, and get your ideas in focus and a good vision of your project.
I still love that idea you came up with for the wheels. That's going to be a really neat L&M Carriage Rob.

Great wheels, you're on a roll with this project!
The side photo looks like you might be able to use to make decals, but that lettering looks more modern than the Rocket's time frame.
