Any tips and ideas how to scratchbuild HO scale ships like supertankers, container ships, car carrier (think those used by Eukor) as well as ocean liners?

The techniques Nolan uses in his n scale kits would probably give you some ideas. He has some great stuff, but it is in N Scale.

You could also look at some of the paper modelers stuff out there and then use the templates to make the basic boat parts from Styrene etc. Just some first thoughts!

Here's a link to Alice Paper Models.
They do a large variety of ships in various scales. (plus other things)

Might be an option instead of completely scratch-building.

Many people are using foam insulation for the hulls.

Ought to float well....amazed the imaginative uses modelers get from things you’d not think of.

Make a rough model out of sytrofoam or cardboard and let it set on your layout for a while.

Ships are awfully big.

Sterling Models used to make an American Freighter kit.

Ship building is a time consuming hobby.

Most people can build an entire layout while others are building one large ship.
