I'm building some keep alive circuits for my critters. The circuit will be housed in a separate tender with pickups on the wheels.

So I have a couple of questions:
1. Where would be a good place to connect the keep alive to the decoders on a sound 0-4-0 Porter?
B. What sort of pickups are available, or ones maybe you have built, for the tenders?

Here are just two of many ideas Paul.
http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=42624 This wiring by Reg Barron (First Picture) along with the Bachmann Soundtraxx info website (Last Picture) wiring is correct to use for keep-alive device.
http://www.railroad-line.com/discussion/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=39640 Paul, you can use this information if you wish for the extra installed pick-ups. (Second Picture) However, Do not use wiring suggestion from this thread, as it has been told by Reg Barron this wiring is wrong.
And, wiring information from Bachmann site; https://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/board/index.php?topic=35566.0

I would not try the wiring shown by Niner Forty Niner ( the late Verne Niner) since it is Wrong! He showed both wires connected to the connection points for the factory supplied sound only cap. This is wrong since it would only provide sound stay alive rather than sound and motor stay alive. Also, he got his polarity reversed, so there would be no stay alive and potential damage to the caps and/or the sound board. He may have experienced improved performance since he added a tender with additional pick ups. I do not mean to disparage his efforts, he was a pioneer in trying to improve the performance of the Porters. The wiring on my thread, and on the Bachmann site, was provided by Soundtraxx and is correct.
Also, be warned, soldering to the tiny circuit board is a bit tricky. Finally, I suggest the administrators remove the wiring diagram provided on his thread to avoid potential future problems to modelers.

Clarification: I was referring to the wiring on Verne's circuit board for keep/stay alive. The wiring shown in his photo of his tender truck, should be fine for adding
additional pick up to the tender.

Using Bachmann HO bobber cabooes as a platform for the keep alive circuits.
