Some more punch list progress today. Mostly, I worked on the patch of the layout where there's both standard and narrow gauge under the stairs. I'm doing that in homasote-over-plywood, cutting the homasote to approximate shape, then gluing those chunks to a piece of plywood. Tomorrow I'll trim the plywood, and hopefully glue the assembly into position. I also got more scenery apron fabric.

Here's the narrow gauge connection from the crossing (just out of sight, near left corner) back to the yard. I also added a standard gauge spur in the same general area, it's going in to the right of the big level.
That standard gauge spur is an addition to the track plan, I added it because I have a kit or two that will fit nicely in that space.
I can't make this permanent until I get the standard gauge track down (since the narrow gauge support is right where I'd have to stand to work on the standard gauge track), and then I might remove this section and hand-lay the HOn30 track on it. (I don't have enough ME HOn30 flextrack, and they don't make it any more.)
Work will be on hold for a couple weeks while we're in holiday in Blighty.

I fit in a piece of styrofoam in the middle of the blob. This will be all urban, and starting with the level styrofoam helps install the buildings plumb. The hill will rise to the right to cover the track.

I'm back from vacation. I picked up a couple small items at some UK hobby shops. Current layout projects include preparing more standard gauge flextrack and constructing HOn30 turnouts using FastTracks jigs. Those are a lot harder than standard gauge! I want to be ready when the next order of Homabed arrives (hopefully in the next week or so.)

There seems to be a consensus on using caulk to attach track to the roadbed. It's cheap, flexible, noise-deadening and relatively easy to remove the track if necessary.
Someone suggested using a fine tooth tile spreader. But then I saw this contraption at Home Depot. I epoxied some styrene over the holes on the outside, so all that is left open is the width of the track.

I'll report back how well this works.

The Great Dover Orogeny* has begun!
First, I transferred the interior perimeter of the track onto a piece of paper.

Then I taped that paper template to 2" styrofoam.

I found this serrated knife at a dollar store (cost $4.) The problem is the blade itself is thicker than the serrated kerf. But it's good and sharp, and the serrations cut pretty well.

I added some risers, and this piece fits at the top of the tunnel portals. There'll be an overhang to create the tunnels, I'll do that from 1/2" styrofoam later on.

Then I added another lower layer.

Finally, I roughed in the big hill that will serve as a view block.
Still more work to do on this.
But now I get a sense of the topography for the blob.

And I got notification my Homabed order is en-route.

So, actually you went to a $4 store and ended up with a 'watermelon knife'. Excellent! Of course I'm envious at how well your layout is progressing.

Dave,
That’s a pretty cute knife in the colors of a watermelon. XActo knives should be red for all the cuts I’ve sustained using them.
Dover Orogeny: you’ve been paying attention in your geology class.

your layout is looking good Dave. I like the "snozzle". It should do a swift, neater job of spreading caulk.
