Hi all,
Just giving plenty of early notice for the 13th Australian Narrow Gauge Convention, due to be hosted in my home town, Geelong, Victoria, across the Easter long weekend of 2017. Providing some initial details in case there is anyone interested that needs to start investigating travel plans and perhaps some additional holiday time around the convention (especially if travelling from overseas, might as well make the most of that effort).

There is an existing website with some initial details, but a rebuilt site will hopefully be going live in the near future.
http://www.austnarrowgaugeconvention.com/

In the mean time, there is also a Facebook page for the event which has some regular postings of interest about the Geelong region, narrow gauge rail history and local happenings leading up to the event.

Planning is well underway with a good range of clinic and presentation topics currently on the discussion table. Also a number of committed traders ready to attend, so thus far shaping up as an enjoyable show. Hope to see some of you there.

Cheers,
Dan Pickard

I was working on my first "90mm Challenge" only last night .

Whoa! Hello there Sir...amazing what surfaces when you mention a convention :)

Very glad to hear you mention that little challenge Nick (especially if it gets some creative work happening again). I finally sat down myself to play with some ideas for that special category for the contest, and its harder than it sounds once you start working on the restricted footprint, but think I have come up with a different idea to work with.

Even happier to hear you may be planning another holiday. Would be excellent to catch up again if you plan to attend.

"Hotel Pickard" is already starting to look well booked, but I could possible make some room for yourself, and include free warm beer on arrival ;)

Cheers,
Dan Pickard

Hi Dan , yes , it looks like I might be making a return trip Down Under , if the Border Guards are feeling generous and let me in again . I have discussed the idea with Bernard Snoodyk and "The Management " hasn't dismissed it out of hand so things are looking hopeful . Though , a lot can happen in the next 15 months or so . 15 months ? I had better get cracking as there are so many prize winning models to build and so little time .

However , don't ask me to do any clinics , as me nerves have only just recovered from last time .

Don't worry about the hotel room , I'm sure space is at a premium at your place with four young Pickerlings to house and feed . Though , I will take you up on the warm beer and a tour of your layout room .

The challenge is even great for those of us who model in the best scale of 1/35 . Why , you could almost get a whole layout on to one of those pipe caps in your titchy scale !

Cheers,

Nick

Hi Nick,
A whole layout on a 90mm footprint...you might be on to my plans (your statement is actually closer than what you may jokingly think!).

I'll shoot you an email in the next week or so (got a couple of important planning duties that need to be addressed fairly promptly this weekend) and chat about some details that may be helpful for you. And I'm happy to let you off the hook from clinics if you turn up with something for the challenge ;)

Cheers,
Dan Pickard

Quick note...the new look website for the 13th Australian Narrow Gauge Convention is now live.

A few more details have been listed, including all information about the modelling and photography contest, plus some information about accommodation and tourism around the Geelong region (if you're planning on travelling this way, might as well make the most of other things to see while you're here!)

Hi all,
I am pleased to announce that the Registrations for the 13th Australian Narrow Gauge Convention, Geelong 2017, are now open for booking!

Every effort has been made to keep this event as affordable as possible, while offering great value for money for those planning to attend this next convention. All the various options are available to book, including the Saturday evening dinner, a dedicated partners program, an extra day of activities at The Bellarine Railway, and event merchandise.

We will have a comprehensive list of clinics to attend, layouts to see, and trade stands to browse., along with the usual large display of contest models. Further details of these will be gradually added to the website as the event draws closer.

Please check the website for further details. I know a number of you have already started booking accommodation, which is fantastic to hear. So spread the word, get modelling, and hope to see as many of you as possible in Geelong in 2017.

Hi all,
Its been a little while since visiting this thread, so just wanted to add some of the latest details...
Our 13th Australian Narrow Gauge Convention is just 4 weeks away now, and the latest news on the event is the release of the clinic schedule. All up, we will feature 34 clinics across the weekend, plus our guest dinner speak, local Aussie modeller and historian with a preview of his new book, "On Splintered Rails - The Era of the Tasmanian Logging Locomotive". Clinics are covering a broad range of subjects, including prototype presentations, modelling clinics and workshops, as well as layout side discussions.

We have also assembled a great range of layouts and displays, 17 in total, so the hall is rather full. There will be various layouts, diorama displays, a couple of discussion tables with demonstrations of 3D printing, DCC tuning, and brass fabrication, plus our feature display, "The Rick Richardson Vulcan Vale Collection". Plenty to entertain in the main hall.

We have a really great range of trade stands joining us for this convention, 13 in total, plus a bring & buy sales board, so most of your hobby needs will be catered for. Some of our traders are travelling quite long distances to present their goods, so please check them out...prepare your shopping lists!

There is also the modelling and photography contest, which is always a great feature of the convention. I've seen some of the models under construction for this contest, and can happily say there are going to be some amazing efforts on the tables.

Registrations for this event close in just under two weeks, so anyone with last minute plans to attend should book in as soon as possible. Its been a lot of planning leading up to his event, and it is shaping up to be our biggest ever. I look forward to seeing a number of you there.

Cheers,
