i've tried 4 times to upload a pic of the hotel with the front gable in bare wood, and it hasn't worked. if you googlle image the idaho hotel you'll be able to.

at least she took the time to send me three and answer (sorta) my question. truth be told, the place looks a bit like a sh*thole. it's really been through the ringer over the years and i understand why all the models of it are painted white all aroumd, but in some of the pics i've seen, the gabled wall on the front left is rough sawn bare wood, like the sides and back.

I know its frustrating Kevin!

For my next project on a structure that still exists, I'm getting zero help from the current owners.

Guess they don't have room in their day for "scale modelers".....
kebmo Posted - 10/25/2019 : 7:53:49 PM
i've been emailing back and forth with the woman who owns the idaho hotel trying (hoping) to get some pictures out of her fand i already have the pics that she sent. i asked her when the roof over the "veranda" on the right side was built because i've seen pictures without the vernada. she didn't directly answer that question, but in 1972 the owner added a "snow roof" (whatever that is) because there were two valleys on the rear roof (which indicates that there were two wings of the structure in the rear. thankfully i'm not modeling the rear) and there was extensive water damage where the valleys were. i wish she would have been able to send more pics of it though.

and yeah, i'm gonna build it out of wood.
no styrene, though i DO have enough clapboard sheet to do it....
damn.

last night i took a straight edge to the drawings that mike sent me in order to get the dimensions (i.e. bottom of windows, spacing etc etc.)
when i start this project i will start a new thread and document the build.

The Tichy and Grandt Line parts are probably too fancy for what you want to do anyway.
Carl B Posted - 10/21/2019 : 07:49:33 AM
Kevin, so now it's an O scale all wood structure, except for some details?

Will be curious to hear about your transaction with Grandt Line...since their "reincarnation".. please keep us posted.

Grandt Line and Tichy both make railings.

May I also vote for wood for your structure. Yes, construction time will be longer, but the weathering effects you will probably want to achieve will probably be easier to produce. If you have some new technique or mediums to produce some specific weathering or texture with styrene, then I'd go styrene, but that would be more of a sandbox model in my estimation.

Nice work!
