This will be my first attempt at uploading a resized photo to the forum.

I've been inactive in the hobby for over thirty years. Now as I near retirement, the bug has bit again. I'm actually starting to build some of those kits on the shelves.

While in the USAF in the erly 1970's I was stationed in San Antonio. There was a layout at Lackland AFB above the bowling alley. I met several modelers who would become inspirations to me. I hung around with Miles Hale, Dick Schaeffer, Bob Clark and John Lawrence. They got me hooked on Shays and HOn3.

So without further adoo, here's my trackplan for the North Coast Railroad, Great Lakes based shortline. I was influenced by the real Buffalo harbor. The Bar Mills "Wharf Street" The C&D Railroad (featured on this forum) and Troells Kirk

I really like the Coastguard Station and I think it would be a great focal point on your RR. Good find.

Been working on the control panel for the main yard, off and on for about two weeks. Only about 400 little pieces of wire to go!

Here's a few more. What I noted was the railroad tracks behind the building, curving around towards the piers. The piers themselves once held several massive grain silos, That is, until they all burned to the ground on one fateful night. The grain trade bu lake freighter fits my theme. The second photo shows some track as they went towards the most northern pier at the mouth of the Oswego River at Lake Ontario.

Thatís a stylish building and it fits right into your theme. Good find!

That building has a lot of potential, David.

David, great job on the turntable. Well worth all the effort you put in.
Hope it works OK for you.

And great picture of that Coast Guard station.
I couldn't find that one, but did find many similar ones online. Really nice lines, and certainly should be built.
Like Carl, I hope you show your full build of it.

Very interesting & pleasing structure David

Hope your intention is to post a build of your version soon..

As interests become more focused, I have been spending time looking at Sanborn Insurance Maps at the Library of Congress Website. It has helped me recognize industries along the historical path of the mythical North Coast Railroad.

As it turns out, there was a real rail line, the Rome Watertown and Ogdensberg that followed a pathway parallel to Lake Ontario. Via a search of the early 20th century map, its revealed the types of industries along that route referred to as the "Hojack Line"

The clues for my small layout (9x9) seemed to indicate the area from the small produce shipping village of Williamson NY through Sodus NY, to the City of Oswego NY seemed to coincide well with my general ideas. It gave me general types of industries, names of specific facilities, cold storage, factories, and industries alone the way.

One of the more interesting points was that I knew I wanted a lighthouse, but thought a life saving station would be more interesting. If you have ever seen that combination on Troels Kirk's layout, you'll know what I mean.

One of the Sanborn maps, disclosed a Coast Guard station In Oswego, Further research revealed old photographs and a drawing.

The drawing is below, You can see it has a lot of modeling potential to it. I will add a search light on top and I will have my structure. Luckily I have found pictures, postcards, or drawings of all four sides.

Thanks to all who have been following this topic, and My posts in general. I do appreciate both your interest and feedback.

I do tend to jump around from one thing to another, including a section I had interest in about 18 months ago, using Infrared Sensors as either fouling point or occupancy detectors.

I'm to that point of construction where it is now or never. For the most part I will make entries in that topic thread found at:

Here, I will simply say I have come with a way to use either a single unit for occupancy on a single track, or a matched pair for fine tuning of fouling points across two tracks.

Looks great, well done!

nice job

Getting closer to being done with what started as a simple atlas surface mount turntable. Safe to say, not so simple any more.

The super structure is now assembled including the truss rods (.020 music wire) One change I decided upon was using a rock crib base instead of the original round cylinder for a base. It just didn't seem to match with every else that was being done.

The building in the back ground is only there to make the scene a little nicer. The hand painted background mural helps set the illusion. The second photo is a bit more close range, and cropped.
