Railroad Street Buildings for Hard Times Ry
1:29 scale

I refer to my large scale layout as the Hard Times Ry. This build will represent a small block of dilapidated buildings for the town. The block will consist of three structures.

I started scratch building structures in 2014 and needed a lot of help. The members of the RRL forum supplied the needed help by posting their builds with step by step instructions and also supplying feedback, suggestions and ideas to help me and others to become a better modeler.
Over the years I often named buildings after the RRL members that helped me.
Frank Palmer has been very influential in my model building through his work on the amazing large scale Sundance Central Module along with his published model building skills on the RRL forum. He’s always there to provide positive feedback and answer questions to all.
The first build of this block will be named the Palmer Feed and Grain consisting of heavily weathered siding, windows and doors. I chose to use a few of Frank’s ideas like crackle medium for the siding and adding rust and nail holes to the feed and grain project.
Frank, I only hope I can do justice to your methods.

The building shells will be constructed of foam core covered with construction paper siding.

Thank you Ted. I'm glad you said the buildings are unique. My goal was to make simple box structures that had a little character and appeal for buildings located in the poor side of town.

I'm working on the diorama base but it's taking me longer since I'm building a room in the basement, for the wife not my trains, darn it! I'll supply outside photos when base is finished.

Getting back to viewing your structure, looks really like a fine piece if construction. Your attentiveness to detailing the sides add to it's overall appearance, especially the coloring of the wood that was mentioned by others. Good work.

Greg, Jim, Carl, Bill, Mike, George, Pete, Bob, Frank and Rob...Thank you for all of the kind words and for following along on this lengthy build. I am in the process of staging the three buildings in a grouping and adding sidewalks and detail. Will post soon.

Rob, there never is enough room for trains but I currently occupy about 250 square feet in the basement that houses a platform and shelving units.

Where do you have the room to have structures / diorama's in such a large scale.
