Posted - 02/08/2018 : 4:55:50 PM Well, it's been a long time since I posted here. My layout's gone through what I call it's "initial completion" for well over a year, took about 2.5 years to get it looking like this. It's had a feature article in the 2017 On30 Annual, online Trackside Model Railroading, will be in the NG/shortline gazette in March and also the 2018 Annual... Here's a before shot of the first day the sections were bolted into place in the room, and 3 years later to the day:
 And a few more:

Glad you got that sorted out easily.
Thanks, Rick. I needed a win that evening, as I'd just gotten a flat tire, plans the following day and had no clue if any tire places would be open the next day and I couldn't get where I was going on the crummy spare that came with my SUV. I got it taken care of the next day after all, but at the time, getting that care taken care of was a big win for me that weekend. |

Posted - 03/29/2021 : 2:26:10 PM Over the weekend, I decided to do something about hopper car 44 which had issues on one turnout, it’d often ‘split the switch’. I thought it was the turnout itself (and dreading the very idea as of course it's the least accessible) but then it occurred to me that one of the axles might be out of gauge. I swapped the wheel sets on one truck and sure enough, that seems to have done it.
Here I am pushing it back and forth, coupled to 36 (the new 3D print from Western Rails) which sailed through with no problems. |

Posted - 03/23/2021 : 5:47:43 PM The "new" hopper was made by Western Rails, the one to the left was a kit by On30IMA. The 3D print was a very easy build, just had to drill a lot of holes and place a lot of decals (22 individual decal placements on just car # 36 alone). I took notes as I went as to the drill bit sizes and such. Any others I get now will be much easier now that I know what tools and parts to have ready. I used the standard Bachmann archbar trucks, which need to have the hole for the bolster re-drilled just a bit to drop right into place. I already had a Kadee 2-56 drill/tap set which was perfect to attach the trucks. Now I realize I made the On30IMA cars much lower than they should be. I used the lowest archbar truck I could find. Comparing them to the new 3D print and original photos, I now realized they should ride higher than they do. Oh well...

Posted - 03/22/2021 : 1:12:58 PM I finished a 3D print of a ET&WNC hopper car, which is coupled to a wood kit of the same type of car. These are great looking cars and I'm looking forward to ordering and completing two more of them:

Posted - 02/11/2021 : 10:41:35 AM Your Trackside Photo looks good. And don't worry about the typo; one of the other photos on that page says Broadway Limited made a BL-2, the other calls F-units E-7s. |
