I am building a layout here, I might seem that all I do is build Steam Engines but, their is a modest model railroad being built too.
Here is part one;
http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=37052

This is the current track plan;

For the last two years I have been focused on build two detailed models of 1870's Moguls that are currently hard at work in 1886. The Girls works hard but are well maintained. I am using the wagon top Moguls of the Virginia and Truckee RR as my prototype drawing heavily from Engine number 4 and 13. In build these two engines I have been relying on 3D drawing and printing on a backbone of conventional model making techniques.

Let the fun continue...

Thank You Andre, The Wine is authentic too. It looks red in the sunlight and UPS brown indoors. Drives you up the wall.

Thank you Mike, It will look better when everything is back together and the paint repaired.

Your mogul is a beautiful machine, Bob.

Nice update Bob!

Good for you on the Campbell's barn acquisition.

Nice catch on the Genesis 2-8-0! I'm currently not pursuing obtaining motive power as I was, although I do watch for 2-6-0's of interest occasionally.

Your custom Mogul is looking right nice, too. Very good choice of color for the boiler!

If one is careful one can still find deals on
Ebay. I was able to get a Campbell's barn for $30. I'm going to put a false front on it and turn it into a livery for Marshfield. I lost in my attempt to get a Classic Miniature's Works Hardware at a very good price but got out bided. Oh well, maybe next time. I was able to get this at a very good price;

I bought one of these last year and couldn't resist picking this one up. Until I repaint and renumber them I just painted vent hatch on the cab roof red so I can tell them apart and know what number to put in the throttle.

work on the moguls continue as i wire up the decoder carefully trying to avoid any possibility of a short.

And this evening She's running again.

SO FAR the new motor is an improvement The engine runs a lot slower and has more strength.
I Did not use a keep alive this time and haven't notice any difference in performance but the decoder is taking changes. The exhaust Synch is way off so I'm in the house looking up how to better match the sounds to the wheels. After I test this for a long week I will do the cosmetic repairs and hopefully start final assembly of number six.

Good to see you back on the Moguls. Iíll have to look at Fusion.

thank you Mike. It's good to be back. The new motor is so far working well. They are not drawing excessive current and are not getting hot at all. They have a much lower RPM which means a low top end to the engine's speed. That's not a bad thing.

Thank you HŚkan,
Oh Ya, it sure is. Results In three hours instead of 2-3 weeks. Not to mention the cost savings.

I haven't got that far yet, but I guess I better look into it. If I can't, looks like it will be Fusion.

Scott, not only those two things, I had so many faults in the designs that they needed a lot of fixing before they would print. That All went away with Fusion.

Thanks Scott, I started with Sketchup, It was ok. I found it limited when it came to anything with curves. Di they ever give you the ability to export in .STL or do you still have to use a #rd party program?

Bob,
Nice prints. I am learning Sketchup and need to make a motor mount for my camel back build.

Building the new motor mount was a fun project. While I developed this part I also tried to enhance my 3D printing skills by increasing quality and reducing the print failure rate.

In this picture the first prints are on the right;

The first one, the walls came out fine but I forgot to move the motor mount holes.
The next one shows the adjustment for those hole but I wanted a little more meat on the left.
After test fitting in the tender I extended the side. Both mounts on the Left are final prints. The box at the back is to hold the Sugar Cube Speaker. Here's one sitting on the tender frame;

I am working on the moguls again;

I'm replacing the motor with a larger and hopefully better built motor so I have to redesign the motor mount.
